World's Largest PDH Unit to Be Built
Honeywell announced that it will support SASA Polyester Sanayi A.Ş. in building the world's largest Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH) unit in Turkey, enabled by next-generation Honeywell Oleflex™ technology. The facility aims to produce 1 million tonnes of propylene annually.
The Honeywell UOP Oleflex™ process is used for the production of light olefins through catalytic dehydrogenation of light paraffins, while also providing a source from which polymer-grade propylene and isobutylene can be obtained.
This environmentally friendly technology offers lower emissions and energy consumption compared to alternatives. The planned construction project will take place between 2023 and 2026 and will include the construction of a PDH production facility with 1 million tonne capacity and a container terminal.
SASA Board Chairman İbrahim Erdemoğlu made the following remarks on the matter:
"SASA is Turkey's first and largest polyester and polymer producer with a sustainable growth perspective. SASA aims to make Turkey one of the top three polyester producers in the world and to become a leading player on a global scale. This vision is becoming a reality with the help of Honeywell's Oleflex™ technology. This is the first technology award for SASA's new initiative in the conversion of crude oil to chemicals, and this project will enable us to develop ourselves while maintaining our innovative spirit." "Our Oleflex™ technology enables investors like SASA to produce low-cost propylene using Honeywell UOP's unique, highly active, stable and environmentally friendly catalyst, thereby participating in the growing propylene market. OleflexTM technology continues to be supported by innovations conducted by Honeywell UOP for over 75 years alongside dehydrogenation technology." Since 2011, most dehydrogenation projects carried out globally have been based on Honeywell UOP technology. Among these projects are those for propane (C3), isobutane (iC4) and mixed C3/iC4 service. Propylene production capacity from Oleflex™ technology currently stands at approximately 13.2 million metric tonnes annually, while licensed capacity exceeds 42 million metric tonnes of propylene per year. Honeywell recently made a commitment to be carbon neutral in its operations and facilities by 2035. This strong commitment is based on the company's long history of successful innovation in sharply reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities and helping customers meet their environmental and social targets.
