DowAksa takes major step toward sustainability goals

DowAksa, one of the world's leading carbon fiber manufacturers, has joined LIST's Sustainable Composite Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Center. This partnership aims to help DowAksa reach its sustainability goals by bringing pre-consumer waste into the circular economy and reducing its carbon footprint. DowAksa, a leading producer of carbon fiber and intermediate products derived from carbon fiber, has become the newest member of the Sustainable Composite Materials and Manufacturing Innovation Center (SCMM). SCMM is an initiative of the Luxembourg Science and Technology Institute (LIST) aimed at turning material innovations into practice and developing zero-emission mobility solutions. SCMM's research and innovation program will provide DowAksa with solutions to evaluate production waste in new applications and, as a result, minimize waste.

Solutions to give new life to production waste

By joining SCMM, DowAksa aims to evaluate pre-consumer waste in new applications and move closer to its sustainability goals by reducing the industry's carbon footprint. Thierry Girot, Technology Manager at LIST's Materials Department, stated: "An important aspect of this partnership is the discovery of new applications for DowAksa's carbon fiber-based intermediate products. Some materials that are not normally used in the automotive sector will be introduced to automotive applications through SCMM's innovative technologies. This initiative aims to effectively evaluate DowAksa's pre-consumer waste within the circular economy, moving it beyond current applications."

Continuing through the end of 2026

DowAksa Chairman of the Board Massimo Rebolini, noting that sustainability plays an important role in shaping the future of composites, emphasized that integrating products into the circular economy is the only way forward. The collaboration between DowAksa and SCMM will continue through at least the end of 2026, with both parties working together to promote innovation and sustainability in the carbon fiber industry.
