Covestro Accelerates Digitalization of Production Processes

Covestro is advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company and across the chemical industry as a whole. As part of these efforts, the Leverkusen-based materials producer is running several pilot projects across different departments to investigate how digital technologies can make processes more efficient and sustainable.

Pilot projects test AI applications

Covestro is testing how the polyester production process at its Dormagen production facility can be optimized. Polyesters are required for polyurethane production. The use of artificial intelligence in processing the company's comprehensive process data aims to create idle production capacity and minimize energy consumption. Digital technologies are also being used at the Dormagen facility and at the Leverkusen and Krefeld-Uerdingen plants to forecast the highest steam consumption at production facilities. This makes it possible to reduce energy consumption and costs in the long term. Another project concerns digital customer experience. Machine learning is being used to help identify potential customers for Covestro across all digital touchpoints on the internet and social media. The goal is to win them as customers in the long term through consultation and information provision.
