Covestro to Build Its Largest TPU Plant in China
Covestro to Build China's Largest TPU Facility
Covestro will construct the largest Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) facility in Zhuhai, China. This will also represent the company's largest investment in its TPU business.
Sucheta Govil, Covestro Chief Commercial Officer, stated, "This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to growth in our Solutions and Specialties business units" and added "With this new TPU facility, we want to capture the expected rapid and strong market growth in the TPU market globally and especially in Asia and China. The production facility will be able to serve both growing Asian markets and demand in Europe and North America."
Expected to Reach Approximately 120,000 Tons Annual TPU Production Capacity
The new facility, located in the Zhuhai Gaolan Port Economic Development Zone in Guangdong province, will eventually span 45,000 square meters. It will be completed by 2033 and is expected to reach approximately 120,000 tons of annual TPU production capacity. The facility will be constructed in three phases. Mechanical completion of the first phase is estimated for the end of 2025. This will result in approximately 30,000 tons of annual production capacity and create approximately 80 new jobs. The initial investment for this phase is in the mid-double-digit million euro range. Dr. Andrea Maier-Richter, President of Covestro TPU, expressed satisfaction at sharing this news, stating "This new facility will allow us to be closer to our customers and value chains in IT, consumer electronics, footwear and other sectors. The majority of the TPU market and growth expectations are in Asia and especially China. Our investment here clearly demonstrates our objective: we want to succeed with our customers and partners in the long term." SourceAdvertisement
