Composites have been used in various forms for thousands of years. Groups of people from different civilizations combined different materials to develop composite materials that created stronger, more durable and versatile structures.
Although composites used in ancient times are not evaluated in the same category as modern composites in terms of materials, production processes and level of advancement, both contain combinations of different materials to create a composite with enhanced properties.
Egyptian Faience: The ancient Egyptians used a composite material called "faience." Faience is a combination of crushed quartz or sand mixed with ceramic glaze. It enabled the production of vibrant, colorful and durable artifacts and its use spread across several dynasties. Egyptian faience is much more porous than true glass.
Although it contained the main components of glass (silica, lime) and lacked clay until later periods, Egyptian faience is frequently addressed in ancient pottery research because, from stylistic and art historical perspectives, objects made from it are closer to ancient Egyptian pottery styles than to ancient Egyptian glass. Egyptian faience could be cast into molds to create small vessels, jewelry and decorative objects.
Roman Concrete: Roman concrete, also known as opus caementicium, was a composite material used in construction during the Roman Empire. Walls made mostly of opus caementicium were typically covered with other materials to create a more solid and workable surface.
It was produced by mixing volcanic ash, lime and aggregate (such as stone or brick) with water. This material, which played an important role in the construction of Roman architectural marvels such as the Pantheon, was extremely durable. According to recent research, during the hot mixing process of Roman concrete, lime particles characteristically develop a brittle nanoparticle architecture that can provide a critical self-healing function, as the team proposed, creating an easily broken and reactive calcium source.
As soon as small cracks begin to form in the concrete, they can preferentially pass through high-surface-area lime particles. This material can then react with water to form a calcium-saturated solution, and this solution can recrystallize as calcium carbonate to quickly fill the crack or react with pozzolanic materials to further strengthen the composite material. These reactions occur spontaneously and therefore automatically heal cracks before they propagate.
Corinthian Helmets: The Corinthian helmet, produced from bronze composition, was a type of helmet used by ancient Greek warriors. This composite design provided protection for the head and face despite being relatively lightweight. In the manufacture of Corinthian helmets, a bronze sheet was shaped to cover the head with openings left for the eyes, nose and mouth.
The helmet had a distinctive shape with a rounded crown, a nose guard and a long, peaked top that could be adorned with horsehair or other decorations.
Bamboo and Wood Composites: Bamboo is a natural composite with a strong outer layer and a flexible inner core. Bamboo can be used as a composite material by combining it with other materials to create a stronger, more durable and versatile substance.
Fibers obtained by processing entire bamboo stalks are then added to an epoxy resin system and converted into high tensile strength composite materials using hot press production methods.
The fundamental principle behind using bamboo as a composite is to take advantage of its unique properties such as a strong outer layer and flexible inner core. Many ancient cultures used composite materials by combining bamboo and wood for construction. In ancient times, engineers used bamboo together with wood and other materials to create many lightweight and sturdy structures ranging from houses to bridges and boats.
Mesoamerican Composite Bows: Indigenous civilizations in Mesoamerica, such as the Maya and Aztecs, used composite materials to construct strong bows for hunting and warfare. These bows combined materials such as wood, bone and animal tendons to create flexible yet powerful weapons.
Lamellar Armor: Lamellar armor, used in various cultures from ancient times to the Middle Ages, was constructed by fastening small plates made of materials such as metal, leather or bone to one another. These composite armor designs offered better protection, mobility and weight distribution compared to solid metal armor.
Composite Bows: Asian cultures, including the Mongols, Chinese and Persians, have a deep history of using composite materials in archery.
Generally composed of materials such as wood, horn and sinew, these composite bows had high strength, flexibility and range. The ancient Egyptians also developed composite bows using a combination of wood, animal tendons and horn. These bows were highly effective for hunting and warfare due to their power and accuracy.
Glued Laminated Timber: Ancient Chinese builders developed glued laminated timber construction techniques in which wood pieces were joined with an adhesive. This composite material enabled the construction of large, strong wooden structures such as bridges and pagodas.
These examples demonstrate the creativity and ability of ancient civilizations in developing and using composite materials to meet various needs ranging from construction to equipment manufacturing. These composites were the beginning of the path to modern composite materials used in various industries today.
