PLASFED Highlights Source Separation System

Ömer Karadeniz, Chairman of the Board of the Plastics Manufacturers Federation, stated that the Source Separation System (KAS) must be implemented without delay for a sustainable world.

Karadeniz said the Deposit Refund System (DİS) will begin as of 1 January 2025 and will be a gain for our country, stating: "As PLASFED, the umbrella organization of the plastics sector, we of course want and support the implementation of DİS. However, the prerequisite for this is KAS."

Ömer Karadeniz, Chairman of the Board of the Plastics Manufacturers Federation (PLASFED), said that economic value must be created by recycling used materials, and noted that this is only possible through the Source Separation System (KAS). 

Karadeniz reported that KAS has been implemented in developed countries for approximately 40 years, stating that unfortunately our country has not yet reached the desired level in this regard. Noting the importance of separating waste at the source and recycling it for a sustainable world and thereby reducing resource consumption, the Federation Chairman said: "If we cannot implement the Source Separation System to a sufficient degree, we cannot reach an adequate level in terms of sustainability and recycling technologies."

Emphasizing that KAS must be put into operation without delay, Karadeniz drew attention to the need to raise public awareness on this matter. Explaining that as NGOs they continuously inform their members on this issue, the Chairman requested that the Government support them through public campaigns. Pointing out that this cannot be accomplished with local administrations alone, Karadeniz noted that local and central administrations must work together.

Stating that in Europe packaging waste has been separated at the source for many years and in this way has added value to both the ecological order and country economies, Karadeniz said: "The world is moving from a produce-use-discard principle to a circular economy model. This is essentially presenting itself as a necessity rather than a choice. Since the resources of our planet are not unlimited, moving to a circular economy requires society to undergo a mental transformation and move away from the 'waste' mentality."

DİS begins as of 1 January

PLASFED Chairman, stating that the Deposit Refund System (DİS) will begin as of 1 January 2025 and will be a gain for our country, said: "There is no developed country that has not implemented DİS in recycling technologies. As PLASFED, the umbrella organization of the plastics sector, we of course want and support the implementation of DİS. However, the prerequisite for this beginning is KAS. Developed countries added value to their country economies by putting this into operation 40 years ago. We must join the system without wasting time. The path to this goes through KAS, that is, the Source Separation System."
