Shell and Braskem partner on bio-based propylene

Polypropylene supplied by Shell to Braskem will help meet growing consumer demand for sustainable plastics. Shell Chemicals announced that it has begun supplying Braskem with bio-attributed and bio-circular propylene feedstock based on a mass balance approach and independently verified by a third party. Braskem will use this feedstock to produce bio-attributed and bio-circular polypropylene that provides more sustainable options for growing consumer demand in the packaging, film, automotive and consumer goods markets. Sean Clarry, Senior Vice President of Commercial at Shell Chemicals, commented on this partnership: "Shell is proud to work with Braskem to supply bio-attributed and bio-circular feedstock entering everyday products that support modern living. This agreement demonstrates how Shell Chemicals is growing its sustainable chemicals portfolio and how Shell is advancing its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and become a net zero emissions energy company by 2050 through the use of bio-waste and bio-circular feedstock."

Contributing to the circular economy

Shell is replacing hydrocarbon feedstock with bio-attributed and bio-circular feedstock in its propylene product, which has the potential to reduce greenhouse gases and contribute to the circular economy. The collaboration between Shell and Braskem, which aims to increase the use of circular content in Braskem's polypropylene production, strengthens Braskem's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and advancing its circular economy goals. Shell has also set a target to reduce absolute emissions by 50% on a net basis by 2030 compared to 2016 levels. This covers all Scope 1 emissions from the company's direct operations and Scope 2 emissions from energy purchased to conduct operations under Shell's operational control. Source
