SABIC, SD and Linde Form Strategic Partnership
SABIC, SD and Linde enter strategic collaboration to explore decarbonization opportunities in the chemical industry.
SABIC, a leading chemical industry company, Scientific Design (SD), a subsidiary that is a licensed leader in Ethylene Glycol Technology, and Linde Engineering, a subsidiary of Linde, a leading global industrial gases and engineering company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore collaboration opportunities to decarbonize the SD Ethylene Glycol Process.
This collaboration aims to reduce carbon footprint and develop innovative solutions to achieve low-carbon emission technology by offering SABIC's innovative CO2 recovery and purification technology to SD-licensed glycol production facilities worldwide. The ultimate goal is to enable sustainable Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Glycol production and set industry benchmarks for carbon-neutral industries.
Bob Maughon, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, CTO and CSO at SABIC, emphasized the company's commitment to carbon neutrality, stating: "As SABIC, we have set a clear path toward carbon neutrality that requires the advancement of innovative technologies at scale in both our existing asset base and our future growth.

By combining SABIC's SD gas processing technology with Linde's expertise in CO2 capture and liquefaction and our strong track record in facility design, execution and operation, we hope to find solutions that support a carbon-neutral petrochemical industry."
Atieh Abu Raqabah, CEO of SD, stated: "We are excited to embark on this groundbreaking journey with SABIC & Linde Engineering and to integrate SABIC's CO2 Capture and Purification technology into our EO/EG production processes.
This technology will enable us to capture and purify CO2 emissions generated during our EO/EG production processes and thereby reduce environmental impact. This strategic collaboration is aligned with our steadfast commitment to sustainability and also positions SABIC Scientific Design as a leader in providing Zero Carbon Ready EO/EG Technology."
The collaboration will leverage SABIC's proprietary CO2 technology, which has proven its effectiveness at the world's largest carbon capture and utilization (CCU facility in the United, a SABIC subsidiary. This technology has the capacity to recover and purify up to 500,000 metric tons (MT) of CO2 annually, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere during ethylene glycol production.
The captured CO2 can be converted into valuable products such as urea, a vital agricultural nutrient that increases agricultural productivity, methanol, a versatile building block for various chemicals, and liquefied CO2, which is widely used in the food and beverage industry.
In 2021, SABIC announced its commitment to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 20 percent by 2030 compared to 2018 in line with Paris Agreement targets and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company's carbon-neutral roadmap consists of five critical pathways: energy efficiency, renewable energy, electrification, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and green/blue hydrogen.
This strategic collaboration between SABIC, Scientific Design and Linde Engineering represents an important step toward transforming the chemical industry and accelerating the transition to a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
