QatarEnergy and partner Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) broke ground on a USD 6 billion Ras Laffan Petrochemicals project in Qatar. The groundbreaking ceremony for the integrated polymer complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City took place with the participation of the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani laid the foundation for the complex, marking the start of construction.
To Begin Operations by End of 2026
Final investment decision (FID) for the petrochemical complex construction was made in January 2023. As of October 2023, the project received USD 4.4 billion in financing through a senior debt financing package. Site preparation commenced in June 2022, with facility operations expected to begin by end of 2026. Total Petrochemical Production Capacity Expected to Reach Approximately 14 Million Tonnes Annually The Ras Laffan Petrochemical project, spread across 435 hectares, will be an ethane processing facility with annual ethylene capacity of 2.1 million tonnes. This facility will position itself as the largest ethane processing facility in the Middle East and among the world's largest. By end of 2026, the facility is expected to increase Qatar's ethylene production capacity by over 40 percent and raise total petrochemical production capacity to approximately 14 million tonnes annually. Additionally, the facility will be capable of producing 1.7 million tonnes annually of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer product. This will increase Qatar's total production by approximately 50 percent.
Qatar's Largest Investment in Petrochemical Sector to Date
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, State Minister for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, stated: "The Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex is being constructed at a cost of six billion dollars, marking QatarEnergy's largest-ever investment in Qatar's petrochemical sector." Regarding the facility's importance, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said: "As a global energy player, it will strengthen our integrated position and deliver significant economic benefits for the country." QatarEnergy holds a 70 percent stake in the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex while CPChem holds the remaining 30 percent stake. Source
