SymControl® Scalp Natural Solution for Oil-Prone Hair and Scalp Symrise has developed an effective solution for oily hair and scalp with new technology. By examining this mechanism, we determined that mannitol, one of the protective osmolytes, can also normalize sebum secretion on the scalp. Based on this research, in a patented and Cosmos-approved compound, we supported the microalgae extract with mannitol, which enhances sebum-regulating effectiveness. SymControl® Scalp targets and balances the COX-2 mediator, which plays a role in sebum production, and prevents excessive sebum formation. Sustainable Production and Extraction We developed the microalgae extract in a sustainable manner using a gentle extraction method with minimal environmental impact. Tetraselmis suecica is sustainably produced in photobioreactors using Blue Biotechnology methodology, with solar energy and recycled CO2. The recovery process reduces the environmental impact of CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Regarding the extraction process of the active fraction, only water is used instead of environmentally harmful solvents. Experiments conducted on gene expression modulation by primary human sebocytes and microalgae extract allow for elucidation of the mechanism of action: Tetraselmis suecica extract significantly contributes to lipid production and particularly to balancing COX-2 formation. Symrise subsequently designed an ex-vivo model using cultured microdissected sebaceous glands (SG) from human donors with original and innovative technology. This model proved to be valid research for cosmetic purposes and in-vivo studies. The developed extraction and lipid analysis protocol allows the model to be used as a predictive screening tool. The data obtained can be successfully transferred to in-vivo, thereby demonstrating its superiority over single-layer cell culture.
