L'Oréal Group's Leadership in Sustainability Recognized
L'Oréal Group, a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) since 2003 and having placed the UN's Sustainable Development Goals at the center of its growth strategy, was approved by UNGC once again this year, thereby positioning the Group among the companies with the highest level of participation in the Compact.
The 10 Principles of UN Global Compact address business's fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environment and anti-corruption, and companies that incorporate the 10 Principles into their strategies, policies and procedures not only protect their basic responsibilities toward people and the planet, but also lay the groundwork for long-term success.
L'Oréal Group demonstrated once again this year, for the 7th time, that it continues to take positive and effective action in achieving its social objectives by transforming its strategies and operations, having been approved as a United Nations Global Compact LEAD company.
L'Oréal Group Vice President, Head of Corporate Responsibility and Vice President of the L'Oréal Foundation Alexandra Palt said the following on the matter: "Businesses can and should be a force for good. Companies are increasingly understanding that it is not possible to thrive in a society that is not inclusive or sustainable.
The recognition by the UN Global Compact validates L'Oréal Group's long-standing commitments and efforts to help protect human rights, ensure dignified working conditions throughout the value chain, and address urgent environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. We have made significant progress on these issues, but we will not stop here. We have only ten years ahead of us to show that change is possible," she said.
UN Global Compact CEO and Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo said: "The world needs more than ever businesses that work continuously, like companies designated as LEAD to improve their sustainability performance, and take action to build a better world."
Through its sustainability program, strong commitment to ethics, policies promoting diversity and inclusion, and philanthropic activities carried out by the L'Oréal Foundation and its brands, L'Oréal Group contributes to 16 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations in 2015.
L'Oréal Group sets out a vision of conducting operations that respect "Planetary Boundaries" over the next 10 years and stands out as a company taking greater responsibility in addressing today's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
Among other commitments, the Group's 2030 commitments include:
• As a partner of New York Climate Week, reiterated its commitment to align with the 1.5°C scenario by reducing greenhouse gas emissions per finished product by 50% across all scopes (25% in absolute terms).
• To help restore one million hectares of degraded ecosystems through the L'Oréal Nature Restoration Fund, an impact investment fund of EUR 50 million.
• To help provide access to employment for 100,000 people from disadvantaged communities worldwide.
As a member of Business for Inclusive Growth and the UN Global Compact Global Supply Chains Decent Work Action Platform, L'Oréal Group also works together with a number of companies to tiered its wage approach across value chains worldwide and help raise the living standards of as many people as possible. The Group believes that it will not be possible to have a strong and functioning business in a world facing climate change and environmental degradation or social unrest.
