Cosmetics Industry Shifts Toward Conscious Beauty

The 5th International Cosmetics Congress brought together leading representatives of the cosmetics sector. At the congress, which attracted significant international participation, sector strategies and assessments were discussed through parallel sessions. Sustainability and the transition to conscious beauty were among the main topics addressed at the congress. The congress, which united the cosmetics sector, was attended by expert speakers including Prof. Dr. Murat Akova, Dr. Yiğit Kulabaş, Marketing Manager Helene Hine, Prof. Dr. Sudesh Kumar, Ministry of Trade Specialist Medine Merve Tokay and Pharm. Spec. Pelin Kılınç Gök.

Demand for Sustainable Products and Resources Increased

Marketing Manager Helene Hine, who works on personal care products, provided remarks. Hine stated: "Today, consumer confidence in cleanliness and greenness has declined, which is why a transition to conscious beauty is now taking place. In this context, the consumer now wants to see a 360-degree picture. In other words, it is no longer sufficient to simply purchase a product; it is also expected to be human-health-friendly and environmentally-friendly." Hine also noted that there is significant increased demand for sustainable packaging use and concluded her remarks by saying: "According to research conducted during the pandemic period, it has emerged that greater interest is being shown in sustainable products and resources. With the process, sustainability has shifted from being merely a brand motto to directing toward real sustainable activities."

Biodegradable Products Instead of Plastics

Prof. Dr. Sudesh Kumar, providing remarks on bio-based polymers for sustainable cosmetics, stated: "The biggest problem in the concept of sustainability is plastic use. Plastic use, which we encounter in every field, also appears in cosmetics. All types of boxes and packaging used in cosmetic products are produced entirely from single-use plastics. This brings irreversible damage to the environment. At this point, bio-based products should be produced. Biodegradable products should replace plastics in the items we use throughout the day. Cost reduction studies are needed for such applications. Biodegradable products can replace plastics at much more favorable costs."
