DPÜ Plants Medicinal and Aromatic Herbs

Dumlupınar University Launches Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Cultivation Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi (DPÜ) has sown sunflower and medicinal and aromatic plants on 180 hectares of idle land with the aim of encouraging producers as well. On DPÜ's land in Geven village, medicinal and aromatic plants including oil-type sunflower, thyme, echinacea, coneflower, lavender, chamomile and sage were planted, and seedlings will be distributed free of charge to villagers. The plants grown by DPÜ will be used in the production of end products such as shampoos and soaps in fields including cosmetics, perfumery and pharmacology, thereby contributing to the city's economy. Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Kazım Uysal conducted inspections on the land in Geven village. In a statement following the inspection, Uysal said: "Our future is in agriculture, our future is in plant production. This is an undeniable fact. Technologically, the world has reached a certain point. However, as you know, food shortages have made food supply difficult. For this reason, universities need to work and think about this issue. As Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi, with my colleagues, especially with our colleagues in the biology department, we discussed what can be done in the field of agricultural production. This year we sowed medicinal and aromatic plants in certain areas on our main campus. Additionally, we took over the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Centre from the municipality and activated it. On this region along the Tavşanlı road, we sowed approximately 110 hectares of sunflower and separately 40 hectares of medicinal and aromatic plants. Both on our campus and at the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Centre we took over from the municipality, medicinal and aromatic plants developed very well and show great promise. I am confident that after today's successful implementation, these barren, unproductive plains currently unsown in Kütahya will change soon. God willing, Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi will lead the way. Not only production, but we will set a good example, we will make our people embrace this work, and we will obtain more refined products used in cosmetics and industry from medicinal and aromatic plants. We will intensify our work in this field."

DPÜ Biology Department Instructor Süleyman Topal stated that their goal is to make production more widespread. Topal said: "We have been on this land for approximately 4 months. After seeing this type of production, excitement set in. We planned production on an area of approximately 180 thousand hectares here. Our rector supported this project of ours. Our project was about sowing and planting on idle land. Our rector allocated serious resources to the project. We sowed lavender, coneflower, thyme, sage and echinacea plants on approximately 50 hectares of land. Lavender is the most important one, of course. This is a 24-month project. Medicinal and aromatic plants are developing and thriving very well in Kütahya. When we increase production to the level of millions, we will distribute it to willing farmers in the form of grants. At the end of 24 months, God willing, we will make Kütahya a centre for medicinal and aromatic plants. After harvesting the products sown, we will process them and convert them into end products. They will be converted into all kinds of end products, up to the shampoo and cosmetics industry. Completely natural production without the use of any synthetic chemicals."
