Dermatologist Dr. Turgay Hasan Bereket of Eskişehir Fizyomer Terapia Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Medical Center explained that ozone therapy applied after burns activates the body's antioxidant mechanism, increases tissue oxygenation, and produces highly successful results in wound and burn treatment. Noting that burns are classified as first, second, third and fourth degree depending on how much they affect the skin surface, Dr. Turgay Hasan Bereket pointed out that much misinformation circulates about ozone therapy.

Careless use of products damages skin

Bereket stated, "For example, there is no evidence showing butter's effectiveness in burns. Butter retains heat and may also contain harmful bacteria that could infect burned skin. Olive oil, coconut oil and similar oils also trap heat and can worsen burns. Egg white can create a bacterial infection risk and cause allergic reactions. Toothpaste can irritate the burn, increase infection risk, and is also not sterile. Ice and very cold water can irritate the burned area and cause cold burns."

Treatment suggestions for skin burns

Noting that first and second degree burns smaller than 6-7 centimeters can be treated at home, Dr. Bereket recorded the following regarding these applications: "Cool water is applied for approximately 20 minutes, then the burned area is washed with mild soap and water. Applying a cool (not cold) compress to the burn area relieves pain and swelling. This procedure can be applied at 5-10 minute intervals. Studies show that aloe vera is effective for first and second degree burns. It has antibacterial and circulation-enhancing effects. Gel extracted from the plant's leaves or creams containing aloe vera can be applied. Honey is naturally anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. If no cream is available at home, a thin layer of honey can be applied. Water-filled blisters may form 1-2 hours after the burn occurs; these should not be touched as popping them can cause infection."

"Successful results obtained with ozone therapy"

Dr. Bereket discussed ozone therapy applied after burns, which has become quite popular in recent years. Noting that this treatment is used and effective in many diseases, Bereket stated: "Treatments performed using ozone gas, an active oxygen molecule, are called ozone therapy. This treatment activates the body's antioxidant mechanism and is used in many diseases. Antioxidants are molecules that prevent free radicals from causing damage. Ozone therapy increases the blood's ability to deliver oxygen to tissues, thereby increasing tissue oxygenation and regulates blood circulation. Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-edema effects, rapid wound healing properties, and cell renewal stimulation, it is highly successful in wound and burn treatment."
