Medicinal Aromatic Plants Cultivated on Idle Land Following inspections conducted by Balıkesir Forest Regional Directorate, a project was prepared to bring vacant state-owned areas beneath energy transmission lines into the economy. Following analysis, cultivation began on 10 hectares of land beneath energy transmission lines in the Karadağ locality near the Sahilyenice and Dedeoba neighborhoods of Bandırma district, with plantings of 3,000 lavender, 5,000 thyme, 5,000 sage, and 20,000 hyssop plants. After harvest, medicinal aromatic plants are targeted to contribute to the economy in both pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors as well as beekeeping.
"We plan to bring 100 donums of land into the economy this way each year"
Balıkesir Forest Regional Director Kemal Kayıran: "During summer months, approximately 100 beekeepers stay in this region. 4,000 hives are located in this area. With this work we are undertaking, we will provide significant support to beekeeping. We will see the serious benefits of this work both in industry as medicinal aromatic plants and in beekeeping. We plan to further increase this work in the coming years. We plan to bring 100 donums of land into the economy this way each year." he said. Kayıran added that they would have the plants harvested by residents of the area, enabling them to generate income. Source
