Does Hot Weather Prevent People from Exercising?

Exercising in hot weather has health benefits but also carries certain risks. Experts emphasize that individuals with medical conditions must consult a doctor before exercising during summer months, and they recommend daily and weekly physical activity and exercise tailored to each age group. Emphasizing that exercises performed in hot and humid conditions can further increase body temperature, Sabri Ülker Vakfı states that individuals with chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes should consult their doctors before exercising in hot and humid weather and undergo general health check-ups. It also points out that those above their ideal weight, children, elderly individuals, and pregnant or nursing women should avoid exercising in hot weather and refrain from going outside during midday hours when temperatures are at their highest.

Replacing lost fluids is necessary

Since the body perspires heavily during exercise, fluid intake becomes even more important. If lost water is not replaced, symptoms such as fatigue and weakness may appear. For this reason, exercise performance can also decline. For every 500 grams of weight loss, drinking 3-4 glasses of water helps replace lost fluids. After exercise, buttermilk, kefir, carbonated beverages, freshly squeezed fruit juices, and cold or lukewarm water containing ingredients such as green apple, cinnamon, lemon, and mint prepared at home according to hygiene rules, as well as cold soups, help relieve thirst and provide energy. They also support replacing the minerals lost through sweating with their vitamin and mineral content.

What should be done for higher-quality exercise

In addition to hot weather, it is necessary to avoid certain risks during physical activity, which is an important method in weight management and improving health. Considering the following recommendations, in addition to choosing an appropriate environment for higher-quality exercise and preferred activities, increases exercise quality. • Try to use areas separated from motor vehicles, such as sidewalks or walking paths. • Run or walk in neighborhoods where traffic-calming speed reduction measures have been implemented. • Choose well-lit areas. • Prefer maintained playgrounds and courts without potholes or obstacles. • Before starting an exercise program, try to obtain clothing and equipment that will meet your needs according to the program.

Physical activity recommendations vary for different life stages and conditions.

Children aged 3 to 5 years: Children in this age group are advised to be physically active throughout the day. Children in this age group should be encouraged to engage in at least 3 hours of active play per day. Children and adolescents aged 6-17 years: They are recommended to engage in at least 1 hour of moderate-intensity physical activity per day involving both aerobic and strength movements. Adults: It is recommended to move more frequently throughout the day and sit less. For healthy aging, it is quite important to perform moderate-intensity aerobic exercise for at least 150-300 minutes per week (at intervals throughout the week) and muscle-strengthening exercise for at least 2 days per week. It can be observed that exercise exceeding 300 minutes per week contributes to health to a greater degree. Older adults: Similar activity guidelines for adults can be followed by these individuals. However, focus should also be placed on balance training. While consulting one's doctor before starting a new type of physical activity is good practice for all ages, it is especially important for this age group. Pregnant or postpartum women: Can aim to perform moderate-intensity aerobic exercise for 150 minutes per week (at intervals throughout the week). If vigorous exercise was performed regularly before pregnancy, it can be continued throughout pregnancy after consulting with a doctor.
