Novartis Group Turkey Reduces Carbon Footprint
Novartis Group Turkey is targeting a reduction of approximately 24% in carbon footprint across both its Kurtköy and Gebze production facilities by 2025 through energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives.
Under its "Solar Panel Electricity Generation Project," Novartis Group Turkey has installed solar panels at both factories, which will generate a minimum of 2,222,540 kWh annually at the Kurtköy production facility and 901,190 kWh annually at the Gebze production facility.
Adopting an environmentally conscious and sustainability-focused production model, Novartis Group Turkey is implementing new investments and projects to reduce energy consumption for uninterrupted production.
Working toward leadership in environmental sustainability, Novartis Group Turkey is increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint through renewable energy projects aligned with global targets.
Noting that energy efficiency and management is a long-term process, Novartis Technical Operations Kurtköy Factory Director Filiz Gündoğmuş stated: "As Novartis, renewable energy generation at our factories is among our priorities. Through the projects we have implemented in this area, we take pride in being an environmentally conscious institution that produces its own energy.
By 2025, we are targeting a 17% reduction in energy consumption, 38% reduction in water consumption, and 24% reduction in carbon footprint. We are undertaking important projects in this direction. With our 'LED Lighting Project' developed to reduce electricity consumption, we are targeting a 120-ton reduction in carbon footprint.
At the same time, through the cogeneration facility we will build at our Kurtköy factory, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint by 2,080 tons. In the coming period, we want to add new projects to these initiatives and set an example for our sector in energy conservation," he said.
Addressing the importance of renewable energy work, Novartis Technical Operations Gebze Factory Director Nurettin Ekizoğlu stated: "Production at our factories continues uninterrupted. Our renewable energy efforts are at a pace that matches our production speed.
Our goal by 2025 is to reduce electricity consumption by 19%, natural gas by 27%, and water by 33%, thereby reducing our carbon footprint by 21%. We are continuing our work under the 'Flue Gas Recovery Project' to recover waste heat from flash steam and flue gas.
With the 'Heat Pump Project,' we will reduce our factory's natural gas consumption by 505,000 m3 and our carbon footprint by 950 tons. As a company, we embrace environmental responsibility and plan our work accordingly," he said.
Through its "Solar Panel Electricity Generation Project," Novartis Group Turkey has been obtaining electrical energy from solar energy since last May through solar panels installed on the roofs of both factories.
With this system in place, the Kurtköy production facility will generate a minimum of 2,222,540 kWh annually, and the Gebze production facility will generate a minimum of 901,190 kWh annually. At the same time, new-generation cooling towers at the factories aim to achieve energy and water savings.
In line with Novartis Group's global vision and sustainability targets, the company is serving an important purpose by increasing renewable energy use in production and aims to further develop these projects in the coming periods.
