Reduce Breast Cancer Risk! Breast cancer, the most common cancer type in women worldwide and in our country, can progress insidiously without showing any symptoms in its early stages. Noting that breast cancer incidence is gradually increasing, while scientists are working intensively to develop revolutionary diagnostic and treatment methods in recent years, Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir, Medical Oncology Specialist at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital states: "The results of studies conducted in the past few years have revolutionized our breast cancer practice. With early diagnosis and effective safe medications becoming part of our daily practice, we can offer modern treatment options with new approaches to our breast cancer patients at every stage." Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir, in a statement made within the scope of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, explained the 3 newest treatment approaches in breast cancer and provided important warnings and recommendations. From unhealthy diet to physical inactivity, from excessive weight to prolonged and uncontrolled hormonal treatments, from smoking and alcohol to never having children, from early menstruation to late menopause… Many factors can create a foundation for breast cancer, whose incidence in our country has been gradually increasing in recent years. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir, Medical Oncology Specialist at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital states: "If there is a family history, particularly a first-degree relative or someone diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, genetic hereditary breast and gynecological cancer syndromes should also be considered and screenings should be planned accordingly." Noting that breast cancer may show no symptoms in early stages but presents itself with palpable painful or painless masses in the breast as the tumor grows, retraction of the nipple, bloody discharge from the nipple, palpable swelling in the armpit, breast skin redness, increased warmth, and orange peel appearance, Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir states: "However, the goal is to diagnose the tumor below one centimeter in early stage before it develops any of these symptoms. This can only be achieved by conducting screenings in healthy women without any complaints."

Pay attention to these 5 prevention measures!

To reduce breast cancer risk, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet with emphasis on Mediterranean diet (that is, consume abundant vegetables and fruits in season, eat plenty of fish, choose olive oil-based foods, reduce sugar and salt consumption, avoid excessive animal fats and processed foods), get quality and adequate sleep, avoid alcohol and smoking, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir. "Recent studies have shown that sleep patterns are also associated with breast cancer development risk. Breast cancer risk has been found to be slightly higher, particularly in women who work night shifts. During sleep, DNA damage that has developed in cells that have entered this pathogenic pathway but have not yet become cancerous is repaired and renewed. Therefore, the protective effect of healthy sleep should not be overlooked either."

Self-examination and mammography save lives!

Emphasizing that even with all these healthy lifestyle habits in place, breast cancer risk does not completely disappear, Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demir states: "Early diagnosis in breast cancer is very important. Because when breast cancer is diagnosed early, it is a disease that can be completely cured. Therefore, every woman should perform self-examination (monthly self-palpation of both breasts and armpits starting from adolescence) and every healthy woman should have a mammogram annually starting from age 40. If there is a particular reason, it should be performed starting from age 35. In families with familial breast cancer syndrome, breast cancer screening is recommended to be performed together with breast MRI."
