In recent years, fatty liver disease has come to affect one in every three people in our country due to obesity, insulin resistance and poor lifestyle habits. Because the disease can progress without symptoms until up to 80% of liver damage has occurred, the chance for intervention diminishes for many people by the time they notice their condition.

In recent years, fatty liver disease has become prevalent in one out of every three people in the country due to obesity, insulin resistance and poor lifestyle habits. Since the disease can progress without symptoms until liver damage reaches 80 percent, many people have fewer intervention options by the time they become aware of their condition.

Prof. Dr. Hakan Ümit Ünal, Gastroenterology Specialist at Acıbadem Bakırköy Hospital, points out that even seemingly harmless practices such as "liver detox" can lead to the problem progressing undetected, resulting in liver failure or even the need for transplantation. However, simple lifestyle changes applied in the early stages can protect liver health.

Prof. Dr. Ünal lists 5 common mistakes that cause serious liver damage as follows:

-Attempting rapid weight loss through crash diets
Very low-calorie diets and rapid weight loss can increase fat storage in the liver. Losing more than 1–1.5 kg per week increases stress on the liver and can trigger disease progression.

-Dieting while neglecting exercise
Lack of exercise leads to muscle loss and increased insulin resistance, accelerating liver fat accumulation. Regular walking and light exercise play a critical role in reducing liver steatosis.

-Excessive fruit consumption
Especially consumption of products stripped of fiber such as fruit juices leads to rapid fructose absorption and increases liver fat accumulation.

-Trusting "herbal and harmless" products
Prof. Dr. Ünal warns that herbal products with unknown contents and dosages can cause serious liver damage. The literature documents cases of acute liver failure and transplant-requiring cases associated with herbal use. The liver does not require extra detoxification.

-Thinking alcohol is harmless
Although liver disease risk varies from person to person, alcohol increases inflammation, raising the risk of steatosis progressing to cirrhosis. Especially in those with fatty liver, even small amounts of alcohol can advance the disease.

In summary, balanced nutrition, regular exercise and informed product use are vital for protecting the liver. Prof. Dr. Ünal emphasizes that the liver can regenerate itself through lifestyle changes made in the early stages.
