Güzin Kırsaçlıoğlu, Member of the European Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and Turkey Representative of Divas in Dentistry, has highlighted the importance of practical and effective dental care methods, from correct tooth brushing techniques to conscious consumption habits, in order to protect our teeth for a lifetime.
We need to brush for longer
Dental health is founded on correct tooth brushing techniques, which emerge as the first and most critical step in keeping teeth in the mouth for a lifetime. Drawing attention to the fact that incorrect tooth brushing habits frequently encountered in daily life endanger dental health, Güzin Kırsaçlıoğlu, Member of the European Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and Turkey Representative of Divas in Dentistry, stated: "We need to change our concept regarding tooth brushing; we need to brush our mouths for longer. Of course, the toothpaste we use while brushing for longer also matters separately. Now we need to use toothpastes that do not contain abrasives, repair teeth, and support saliva production."
Eating habits are important
The path to having healthy teeth does not lie only in tooth brushing, but also in eating correctly and consciously. Dr. Güzin Kırsaçlıoğlu, emphasizing the importance of eating habits in order to have healthy teeth, stated: "Cheese, with its casein content, has a quite negative effect on microorganisms that harm oral and dental health. Peanuts, with their rich phosphate content, nourish saliva composition. Green tea and sage tea, with their antioxidant properties, positively affect saliva composition and gum health. Foods such as strawberries, apples and kiwis, when eaten by biting, are quite beneficial for the health of teeth and gums." Saliva quality, an element generally overlooked in oral health, stands out as another important factor in protecting dental health and maintaining aesthetic smiles for a lifetime. Kırsaçlıoğlu, who states that saliva composition has critical importance in protecting teeth against acid erosion, preventing dry mouth and preventing wear that may occur on teeth, continued her remarks as follows: "For us, saliva and the quality of saliva are very important because saliva is actually a protective element for teeth. It forms a film layer on the teeth and eliminates the acidic effect of food, acting as a buffer. It contains calcium and phosphate. For example, poor saliva quality alone can lead to cavities. If you have fluid saliva, it cleans the teeth, but if it has a foamy and sticky consistency, it causes food debris to stick more to the teeth and leads to more tartar formation."
