Experts note that gum bleeding is among the most frequently encountered dental problems. But why do our gums bleed when we brush our teeth? Oral and Dental Health Specialist Dt. Mustafa Yılmaz answers.
What is tooth whitening (bleaching) and does it damage teeth?
When the whitening procedure is applied with the correct patient selection, correct indication, correct technique and material selection, it certainly causes no harm. There are points that must be considered in patient selection. It is not appropriate to apply the procedure to patients with defects in their teeth, existing sensitivity problems, or gum recession with exposed root surfaces. In material selection, whitening agents approved by the Ministry of Health should be preferred and it must be applied exclusively by a dentist.
What should a tooth brushing routine look like?
To maintain oral and dental health, brushing our teeth correctly is very important. Tooth brushing is the most important part of oral care to prevent tooth decay and tartar formation. Teeth should be brushed at least twice daily for 3 minutes each time. Tooth brushing removes bacterial plaque and food debris to a large extent. However, to completely remove bacterial plaque and food residue, dental floss must be used.
Why does gum bleeding occur when brushing teeth?
• Neglect of oral and dental health care causes plaque and food debris to accumulate, leading to inflammation of the gums. When the connective tissues in the gum tissue or at the junction of the gum and tooth tissues become inflamed, the tissue integrity of the gums is compromised (Gingivitis, Periodontitis). This condition can cause gum bleeding. • Brushing teeth too aggressively can cause gum bleeding. • During pregnancy, hormonal changes can affect the gums and cause bleeding. • Existing bleeding disorders can lead to bleeding tendency and gum bleeding.
Under what conditions should third molars be extracted?
Third molars are the rearmost and last teeth to erupt. When there is sufficient space in the jaw bone and the teeth have erupted properly and there is no problem with the bite against the opposing teeth, extraction is not necessary. However, extraction is required when there is insufficient space and risk of crowding, presence of an abscess, presence of decay, or presence of pressure pain.
