Tooth Decay May Become a Thing of the Past

Dr. Funda Özsarı, Member of the European Society of Aesthetic Dentistry: "Vaccine research against dental caries shows promise."

 

Dental caries, affecting people of all ages worldwide, continue to be one of the most common problems in oral health. Thanks to newly developed dental caries vaccine research, this condition is expected to become history in the future.

Dr. Funda Özsarı, Member of the European Society of Aesthetic Dentistry, described this new vaccine development as "a revolutionary step in dental health," noting that vaccine research developed against caries targets the Streptococcus mutans bacterium, which forms plaque on tooth surfaces and damages tooth enamel. Özsarı emphasized that these new vaccine studies, developed particularly through nasal spray or sublingual applications, enhance immune response in oral mucosa and contribute to protecting teeth from caries.

Highlighting that detailed information about the research was provided in Frontiers, an independent peer-reviewed academic publishing platform presenting scientific research publications, Özsarı stated that the research demonstrated high success in experiments on rodents and primates, and emphasized that the projection that this vaccine could provide a definitive solution to caries if it proves this success in human trials is extremely important.

Effect and Safety of Caries Vaccine

 Sharing the information that "vaccines not only prevent caries formation but also have the potential to prevent bacteria that could lead to systemic health problems such as heart disease and diabetes from spreading in the body," Özsarı noted according to research published by Oxford Academic and Frontiers that caries formation can be reduced by 60-70 percent through nanoparticle-based DNA vaccines. Özsarı pointed out that these vaccines with low adverse effect profiles in scientific research are directly effective against bacteria that threaten oral health and have the capacity to create immunity in oral mucosa thereby reducing systemic infection risk.

Timeline for Implementation Could Be 5 to 10 Years

Stating that if the dental caries vaccine proves successful it could revolutionize dental health, Özsarı said: "According to research, several more years of human testing are expected to be completed for the vaccine to become globally applicable. If successful, we may see a period in dental health in the next 5 to 10 years where caries can be largely prevented."
