High school students competed with their projects in the 'Bayer Inter-High School Science Competition', held for the third time this year.
Bayer Interscholastic Science Competition Won by İzmir Atatürk High School's "Energy from Boron" Project
High school students competed with their projects in the third edition of the 'Bayer Interscholastic Science Competition' this year. In the competition, which received 458 project submissions, the project titled "Energy from Boron" by Zekihan Özerdem, a student from İzmir Atatürk High School, won first place.
26 April 2017, Istanbul – The winners of the Bayer Interscholastic Science Competition, organized by Bayer for the third time this year with the aim of fostering students' interest in science, encouraging them to make new discoveries and strengthening their creativity, have been announced. In the competition, the top three-placing students and schools were selected by a jury composed of academics, while a team selected by Bayer employees received the Bayer Special Award. The competition, which featured 458 projects under the theme "A Better Life," was won this year by Zekihan Özerdem, a student from İzmir Atatürk High School, who developed a battery using boric acid. Second place was achieved by Aylin Gökmen and R. Kerem Şahin from İzmir Özel Türk Koleji Science High School with their project examining the effects of coconut oil on breast cancer cells. Third place was awarded to İstanbul Koç Özel Lisesi students Gün Kaan Aygen and İsmet Berkay Çelik with their project "Cancer Cell Detection Using Artificial Intelligence," which analyzes cancer patients using deep learning, one of the latest techniques in the field of artificial intelligence. The Bayer Special Award was received by Yunus Alper Bağcılar and Seyitalp Böyükata, students from Yozgat Fatma Temel Turhan Science and Arts Center, with their project "Catalyst Syntheses with Innovative Approaches for SBH Hydrolysis," which developed hydrogen gas obtained from the hydrolysis of SBH. Winners and finalists received their awards and certificates at a special ceremony attended by Bayer employees. At the ceremony, Nevra Çağman, Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations at Bayer, congratulated the students and said: "As Bayer, by focusing on what we know best, which is science, we are conducting sustainable and value-creating corporate social responsibility projects. Through our Bayer Young Science Ambassadors program, which we have been running shoulder to shoulder with Community Volunteer Youth for 5 years, and our Bayer Interscholastic Science Competition, which is completing its third year, we will continue our efforts to encourage elementary and secondary school students from all over Turkey to pursue careers as scientists."Apart from the award-winning projects, the other six projects that made it to the top 10 and competed in the final were as follows:
