Turkish Salmon Expands into Global Markets

A promotional film has been prepared as part of an effort to build a global brand for Turkish salmon, whose exports have grown 17-fold over the past five years in the Turkish aquaculture sector.

Turkish salmon, whose exports have increased 17-fold in the aquaculture sector over the past five years, has been promoted through a promotional film as part of global branding efforts.

The Aquatic Products and Animal Products Sector Board of the Turkish Exporters Assembly is implementing a project to expand Turkish salmon's share in the global market, with exports reaching 45 countries including Russia, Belarus and Japan.

Within the scope of the project aimed at highlighting the superior qualities of Turkish salmon, which differentiates itself from competitors with lower fat content and higher Omega 3 content, a promotional film and public relations activities for the international press have been launched.

The promotional film featuring Turkish salmon was shot at open-sea net cages in the Black Sea, hatcheries and salmon processing facilities, as well as at cage operations on reservoir lakes in Eastern Anatolia.

The film documents the journey of Turkish salmon starting from hatchery facilities built on rivers, continuing in inland cage operations and extending from open-sea operations to the table, and also captures analyses conducted at the Central Aquatic Products Research Institute (SUMAE) laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

In addition to the promotional film prepared in Turkish, English, Russian and Japanese, a social media video about Turkish salmon was also created.

Sinan Kızıltan, Chairman of the Aquatic Products and Animal Products Exporters' Associations Sector Board, noted that Turkish salmon exports, which stood at USD 29 million in 2019, rose to USD 498 million last year with approximately 17-fold growth by the end of 2024.

2025 target: USD 600 million
Kızıltan stated that 32,000 tonnes of Turkish salmon were produced in January–July 2025 at farms established along the coastal strip in Sinop, Samsun, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin, and exports reached USD 268 million with a 23% increase, adding that they expect foreign currency earnings from this product to reach USD 600 million by year-end.

Pointing out that Turkish salmon, which competes with Norwegian salmon, has extensive market opportunities, Kızıltan said, "Turkish salmon is a product with highly competitive strength in terms of its taste, nutritional value and sustainable production conditions. Through investments to be made in the Black Sea, we are targeting Turkish salmon exports exceeding USD 1 billion by no later than 2035. Within the scope of this target, we are working intensively to introduce Turkish salmon to sector representatives and consumers in target markets. In addition to leading sectoral fairs, we plan to rapidly expand this taste through country-focused activities."

Kızıltan added that consumption of Turkish salmon in the domestic market is also increasing rapidly, and it is preferred particularly because of its high Omega 3 and protein content.

The Aquatic Products and Animal Products Exporters' Associations Sector Board had previously prepared promotional films on aquatic products, poultry meat and eggs, and pine honey. These promotional films are being used effectively in digital channels and at trade fairs.
