World Food Day's Theme This Year: "End Hunger"
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has chosen "End Hunger" as the theme for this year's World Food Day, celebrated annually on 16 October. BESD-BİR Chairman Dr. Sait Koca: ''There are things all of us can do to end hunger and keep our world healthy. The objectives announced by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) to end hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition and develop sustainable agriculture align perfectly with the objectives of Turkey's poultry meat sector. We are making every effort to support all these developments." he said.
BESD-BİR Chairman Dr. Sait Koca noted in his statement that the poultry meat sector provides significant contribution to agriculture in Turkey and added: "Turkey's poultry meat sector, with its potential, is positioned as a country candidate to be a global player.
At the point we have reached today; our sector, with annual turnover of approximately USD 5 billion, with 15,000 registered poultry houses, indirectly provides livelihood for 3 million people.
The sector, which generates intensive employment and supports agriculture, thereby providing significant added value to the Turkish economy; ranks 8th in the world in chicken meat production and 5th in global poultry trade.
In reliable poultry meat production from farm to fork, all our stakeholders work in coordination, and the strength of this bond creates positive impact in food security and sustainability." he said.
Dr. Sait Koca: "World population is expected to reach 9.77 billion in 2050 and 11.18 billion in 2100. Feeding the world's growing population and particularly ensuring balanced nutrition will be the main agenda of the future.
The number of people affected by chronic food insecurity worldwide is 815 million. According to the latest estimates made for 2016, 155 million children under five years of age worldwide suffer from stunting due to malnutrition. The cost to the economy of malnutrition is USD 3.5 trillion annually." he said.
