Novozymes Named EPA Safer Choice Partner Again This Year
Novozymes has been named 2023 Safer Choice® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its outstanding performance in producing safer ingredients for families, pets, workplaces, communities and the environment.
Novozymes is among the winners of 30 Safer Choice Partner of the Year awards to be announced by the EPA in 2023.
The Safer Choice program helps consumers and purchasers find safer and higher-performing products for human health and the environment for facilities such as schools and office buildings. Novozymes' recognition is based on the company's innovative approach to creating enzymes for inclusion in safer detergents and its advocacy for Safer Choice component use in raising Safer Choice awareness.
Arnaud Melin, Vice President of Consumer Biochemicals, Novozymes Americas, said, "We are proud to receive this recognition again as a Safer Choice Partner. As Novozymes, we are committed to developing best-in-class enzymes for home care products that are safe for families, our waterways and our planet."
Novozymes is on an ambitious journey to enable biological detergents without compromising on washing performance and cost. The company continues to build its product portfolio to help industry partners bring U.S. EPA Safer Choice approved consumer products to market.
The Denmark-based biotech leader introduced two unique and potent enzymatic blends under the Novozymes Medley® banner in 2023, both meeting Safer Choice criteria. The Medley® portfolio helps detergent manufacturers reduce the number of products they need to carry, lowering packaging and shipping costs and thereby reducing their carbon footprint.
Novozymes demonstrated its commitment to the EPA's climate change goals by working to reduce carbon emissions. Last year, Novozymes reduced CO2 emissions from its operations by 63 percent based on 2018 as the baseline year and sourced 82 percent of its electricity from renewable sources.
The company has also taken bold steps to reduce carbon emissions from its entire supply chain with the goal of reaching net zero by 2050. Novozymes is among the first companies in the world whose net zero targets across scopes 1, 2 and 3 were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
"Our company's purpose states 'Together, we create biological answers to enable better lives in a growing world.' A vital element of this is not just doing our part with our own products, but also educating and empowering others—whether our commercial customers, organizations we partner with, or the general public—to discover and adopt these solutions," the company said.
"Going forward, our focus will continue to be on reducing the cleaning industry's need for fossil fuel-based surfactants and other non-renewable chemicals while meeting consumers' expectations for cleaning performance and price."
For a product to qualify for the Safer Choice label, it must meet the EPA's Safer Choice Standard, which contains strict criteria regarding human and environmental health. The Safer Choice program currently works with approximately 350 formulator-manufacturer partner companies producing approximately 2,000 Safer Choice certified products for both consumers and commercial purchasers.
