R&D Support for Chemical Sector Coming Under 11th Development Plan

The chemical industry aims to produce high-value-added, environmentally friendly and competitive products through the use of advanced technology and coordinated investments, with the goal of reducing Turkey's import dependency in this sector and increasing its share in production and exports. Within this framework, over the next 5 years, intermediate input imports in the chemical sector will be reduced, while production and exports of high-value-added products that are sensitive to human and environmental health will be increased. A large-scale petrochemical facility will be established in the Çukurova Region and major investments starting in the Ceyhan Energy Specialized Industrial Zone will be completed to create an integrated production structure including basic petrochemicals. Companies that can supply composite materials with extremely high heat resistance needed for nuclear power plant construction through domestic production will be supported. Plants producing ferroboron, boron nitride and boron carbide will be completed and brought into production. Refined boron product production volumes, R&D capacity and expertise will be strengthened, and sales and marketing activities for the developed products will be increased. In addition, biomass and waste will be utilized efficiently and evaluated as alternative inputs in chemical production. Demand forecasts for advanced materials used in components of technological products will be determined and support will be provided for their domestic R&D and production. Applications that will increase the chemical sector's R&D and sustainability expertise will be implemented. Legislative regulations will be made to encourage the use of bioplastics, which can be produced from many natural products, particularly hemp and corn, and which dissolve completely in nature, and R&D and investment support will be provided. Turkey's lignite reserves will be evaluated. Feasibility studies will thus be conducted to enable the establishment of gasification reactors that allow the production of coal-based chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, monomers, synthetic natural gas, hydrogen and synthetic liquid diesel fuel.
