PPG Introduces Next-Generation Coating Solution for Textured Plastic Repairs

PPG (NYSE: PPG) announced that its SEM Products division, in collaboration with 4Plastic, has launched a new generation of texture coatings specifically developed for repairing unpainted and textured plastic components onto the market. The new range is aimed at properly restoring textured bare plastic exterior parts, increasingly common in the automotive refinish sector, after damage.

The new series aims to properly restore textured bare plastic exterior parts, which are increasingly common in the automotive refinish sector following damage.
Larry Trexler, Global Auxiliary Products Technical Market Support Manager for PPG Automotive Refinish Coatings, noted that as vehicle manufacturers shift from traditional painted panels to textured plastic exterior components, the need for proper restoration of these surfaces in the repair sector has grown. Trexler emphasized that textured replacement parts cannot achieve full compatibility with faded plastic surfaces on vehicles, creating a significant challenge for repair shops, insurance companies, and OEM programs.
Advanced formulation mimicking OEM textures
The SEM and 4Plastic texture series comprises advanced coatings formulated to mimic the most common OEM textures. Body shops can quickly and easily identify and match the correct texture for repair through the 4Plastic application available on iOS and Android platforms.
According to internal test results, the system demonstrates high durability and performance. Accelerated aging tests confirm strong environmental resistance with minimal gloss variation reflecting natural OEM wear, while adhesion tests verify long-term bonding. Abrasion and solvent resistance tests demonstrated that the coating performs without damage or color transfer under real-world use conditions.
"Repair-first" approach
Michael LoPrete, General Manager of 4Plastic, stated that while OEMs are consistently moving toward textured plastics in their design and manufacturing strategies, the repair sector has lacked an advanced system to properly restore these textures until now. LoPrete noted that the new series offers body centers a genuine "repair-first" alternative for textured components.
The new system enables consistent results through fast application, predictable outcomes, and simplified training periods, allowing even entry-level technicians to achieve reliable results. This approach reduces unnecessary part replacement costs while shortening process times; it also supports sustainability goals by reducing plastic waste and part-sourced emissions.
The SEM and 4Plastic product line is also complemented by various equipment, including an innovative tool designed to correct gouges in plastic bumpers and clarify body lines. The product series is now available in the US and Canadian markets.
