Adam Opel AG has tasked G&H Kunststofftechnik GmbH & Co. KG with engineering a continuous flow cathodic electro-coating system for standard steel automotive components. This plastic application marks the first use of this technology at Opel. Due to superior chemical resistance properties, the contractor selected SIMONA®PP AlphaPlus ® sheets and pipes as the coating material.

SIMONA® PP AlphaPlus ® Sheets and Pipes for Maximum Electrical Insulation – Initial Conditions
Cathodic electro-coating is a critical process stage for protecting car bodies from corrosion. Metal components to be coated are connected to the cathode and placed in an electrolyte bath where a direct current (DC) electrical field is present. The coating process creates a corrosion-inhibiting layer several micrometres thick on the metal surface. In the automotive industry, cathodic electro-coating bath systems with continuous flow are constructed from steel due to its durability properties. Task To provide electrical insulation, steel baths are typically lined with glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) laminate. In this application, however, polypropylene bath was used for the first time in the automotive sector as an insulation solution instead of a steel bath (U x G x Y: 29.8 x 3.4 x 2.2 m). To select an appropriate coating material, two additional critical requirements had to be met. The material must not contain substances that interfere with paint wetting, and the material must demonstrate good chemical resistance at 30°C.Advertisement
