Indoor Moisture and Humidity Adversely Affect Quality of Life

One of the most significant problems in Turkish homes is identified as moisture, dampness and mouldy walls negatively affecting quality of life. Ytong, a mineral-based wall material produced from natural raw materials, naturally removes moisture to regulate indoor air quality and prevents dampness and mould formation.

90 percent of our lives is spent in buildings

Human life is spent 90 percent of the time in buildings to meet needs such as shelter, work, education and similar requirements. For this reason, structures have an important impact on human health. Thermal insulation, daylight use and natural ventilation, as well as creating healthy indoor spaces and minimising energy consumption, are very important for all structures, particularly residential buildings.

36 percent of Turkish homes are damp

According to the results of the Turkish Statistical Institute's "2018 Income and Living Conditions Survey", one of the most important problems related to housing in our country is the heating problem caused by insulation deficiency. 39.6 percent of survey participants stated they could not heat their homes due to insulation problems, and 36.2 percent of them reported problems due to leaking roofs, damp walls and rotted window frames.

How does dampness occur?

Considerable moisture is produced in homes during the day. Moisture and steam are continuously created through bathing, drying laundry, washing dishes, cooking and even the breathing of household occupants. If the steam has no way out, it becomes trapped inside the house, causing dampness and mould on walls with insufficient thermal insulation and condensation on windows. Dampness damages not only belongings but also our health.

The solution: breathing walls

Natural ventilation allows the moisture inside the home to be balanced and the indoor air to be largely cleaned. Besides this, walls can also help remove environmental moisture in a natural way. This is simply called walls breathing. Natural materials are breathing materials. Scientifically, walls breathing is actually the presence of vapour permeability, meaning the ability to diffuse. The most natural way to remove moisture from a home is through the building envelope's ability to breathe. Ytong is a mineral-based wall material produced from natural raw materials. Thanks to its thermal insulation and breathing properties, it does not cause problems such as condensation or dampness on walls. Ytong walls, with their diffusion property, expel water vapour created indoors and environmental moisture to the outside, contributing to maintaining a healthy room climate. With this property, it naturally regulates the building's interior environment. Since the structure's walls remain dry, there is no mould formation. Buildings with Ytong walls have less structural moisture from the construction process onwards, thanks to the very thin layer application of the bonding mortar used in the laying of the blocks.
