Heat Management in Paints

Rising energy costs and global warming are increasing the demand for smart solutions that contribute to heat management.

On average, 50% of solar radiation is absorbed by the earth's surface. Approximately 90% of this energy is absorbed by black surfaces, which become heated. White surfaces, by contrast, absorb only 25% of this energy and remain cool.

However, white color cannot be the only option for cool surfaces. Colored and dark colors are predominantly in demand for exterior surfaces. BASF recommends solutions with Sicopal® Black L 0095 and Paliogen® Black L 0086 pigments for color requirements beyond white.

Because the solar energy reflectance value, referred to as TSR (Total Solar Reflectance), of these pigments is higher than that of carbon black, they help reflect more of the solar energy reaching the surface and keep surfaces cool.
