Fire-Resistant Paint with Boron Additive Developed
A 15-member team headed by Associate Professor Fatih Şen, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biochemistry at Dumlupınar Üniversitesi, has succeeded in producing fire-resistant paint with boron additive using nanotechnology, following approximately three years of research. Associate Professor Fatih Şen, providing comments on the subject, stated the following: "Our product is currently ready for mass production. Fire-resistant paints of this type should primarily be used in schools, dormitories, hospitals and military buildings, which are high-occupancy areas, as protection against fire." Emphasizing that paints produced worldwide to date have been given flame-retardant properties at best, but that these materials pose various risks to human health, Associate Professor Fatih Şen continued: "Flame-retardant materials developed particularly in the US and EU countries alter the composition of the substance to which they are applied and create application difficulties. Moreover, although the materials in question provide flame retardancy, they release toxic gases such as hydrochloric acid and hydrobromic acid during combustion. These materials also do not prevent the formation of carbon monoxide gas, which causes death and poisoning during combustion.""Environmentally friendly and safe for health"
Stating that the paint they produced by adding boron is completely non-flammable and that all tests conducted were successful, and emphasizing that the fire-resistant paint produced is environmentally friendly and poses no health risk, Associate Professor Fatih Şen continued: "All raw materials used in our scientific research were sourced from domestic sources. Dumlupınar Üniversitesi management and our department chair Prof. Dr. Yunus Erdoğan made substantial contributions to this project. As a team, through experiments conducted in our university's nanotechnology laboratories, we have developed a new nanomaterial-based product with boron additive. In addition to being environmentally friendly, this product absolutely does not harm human health." Associate Professor Fatih Şen added that fire-resistant paint adds only a few lira to the cost compared to standard produced paint.Advertisement
