Leading market research firm Grand View Research has released a comprehensive report on dispersing agents. The global dispersing agents market, recorded at USD 5.37 billion in 2022, is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% from 2023 to 2030. This growth is attributed to increased applications of dispersing substances in the paints, coatings and inks industries, as well as rising construction activities worldwide. Dispersing agents are highly important in the paints and coatings industry because they contribute to improved performance and stability of the final product. These substances help prevent pigment agglomeration or settling, providing uniform distribution and color consistency. The construction sector is witnessing significant growth worldwide due to increasing infrastructure development, urbanization and renovation projects. The use of dispersing agents is of great importance for construction materials such as paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants. Dispersing agents improve the distribution of pigments and solid particles, enhancing the performance and durability of these materials while improving their aesthetic appearance. According to the World Paints & Coatings Industry Association, the global construction market showed significant growth, rising from USD 6.4 trillion in 2020 to USD 8.2 trillion in 2022. Technological advances in construction materials enabled the development of high-performance products requiring effective distribution of additives and fillers, driving demand in the product market. The United States was the largest consumer of dispersing agents in North America in 2022 with a 70.5% share. Growth in the product market during the forecast period can be attributed to increasing demand in existing and emerging end-use industries. These industries encompass many sectors, primarily oil, gas, paper, paints, detergents, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and automotive. According to the International Trade Administration, the United States, which has one of the world's largest automotive markets, ranks second in vehicle production and sales. The country recorded 14.5 million light vehicle sales in 2020. In this context, increasing automotive demand is expected to drive higher demand for dispersing agents, as these substances play an important role in achieving homogeneous distribution of pigments, fillers and other additives in automotive coatings. Segment breakdown by type: The water-based segment dominated the market in 2022 with a 79.4% share. This is attributed to increasing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly products across various industries, including paints, coatings and inks. Water-based dispersing substances contribute to the development of environmentally friendly formulations, aligning with this demand. These refer to surfactants or polymeric compounds possessing hydrophilic properties that allow them to interact with water molecules. Water-based dispersing agents containing functional groups attached to the particle surface reduce interfacial tension between particles and the liquid medium. Other types, including solvent-based and oil-based, are also expected to grow during the forecast period. Solvent-based products are formulated to disperse solid particles in solvent-based systems. These dispersing agents refer to organic compounds with good solubility in the solvent used in the formulation and enhance overall performance by increasing the durability of the final product. Oil-based dispersing agents are specially formulated for use in oil-based systems. Oil-based dispersing agents are designed to disperse solid particles or pigments in oil-based formulations such as oil-based paints, varnishes and coatings.

Structural segment breakdown

The anionic segment led the structural segment market in 2022 with a 37.8% share. This can be attributed to its broad application areas, including paints, coatings, inks, adhesives and ceramics. By preventing particle agglomeration or settling in formulations, this segment offers excellent dispersion stability, improving color development, reducing viscosity and enhancing overall performance of the final product. Furthermore, water-based systems, which are gaining popularity due to their advantages in environmental regulations as well as health and safety areas, are particularly suitable for anionic dispersing agents. These dispersing agents effectively distribute pigments and additives in water-based coatings, inks and other formulations, contributing to increased demand for anionic dispersing agents. Amphoteric dispersing agents, possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, are another segment expected to witness growth during the forecast period. Unlike hydrophilic or hydrophobic substances possessing strong affinity for water and nonpolar substances, amphoteric dispersing agents stand out for their versatility. Therefore, they can interact with both types of materials. They contain functional groups capable of ionization under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These functional groups generally contain amino acids such as glycine or betaine, which possess both positive and negative charges at different pH levels. This unique property allows dispersing agents to interact with a wide variety of particles and substances regardless of their surface charges. Amphoteric dispersing agents, operating through a combination of electrostatic and steric stabilization mechanisms, can form a protective layer on the surface of particles and droplets when added to a system, preventing these substances from combining. Charges on the functional groups of dispersing agents enable them to interact with particle surface charges, providing electrostatic stabilization. Furthermore, hydrophilic or hydrophobic portions of the dispersing agents extend into the surrounding liquid, creating repulsive barriers between dispersed particles and helping maintain their stability.

Regional breakdown

The Asia-Pacific region dominated the market in 2022 with a 39% share. This stems from rapid industrialization in countries such as China, India and Southeast Asian nations. This industrial growth increases demand for the product across various sectors including paints and coatings, adhesives, textiles and pharmaceuticals. Dispersing agents are necessary in these industries to ensure optimal distribution and stability of components. According to the International Trade Administration, China is the world's largest construction market and the sector in this region is expected to show approximately 8.6% growth from 2022 to 2030. Additionally, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, implementation of China's 14th Five-Year Plan in 2020 is helping develop greener and more efficient cities in China to improve the quality of urban living conditions. On the other hand, measures taken by the Indian government to improve the country's infrastructure are also helping the construction sector's growth. Therefore, the developing construction sector is expected to increase demand for the product in the region. North America is another region expected to witness growth during the forecast period. The region has shown strong growth in the paints and coatings sector due to the impact of both residential and commercial construction projects. As consumers prioritize environmentally friendly and high-performance coatings, demand for dispersing substances is increasing. According to the World Paints and Coatings Industry Association, the North American paints and coatings market was valued at USD 33.92 billion in 2022. Due to the increase in the number of home renovation activities in countries such as Canada, Mexico and the United States, the market is expected to witness growth in the coming years.   Source
