New Cortec Additives Enhance Corrosion Protection in Water-Based Coating Systems
Formulators seeking to enhance corrosion protection in water-based coating systems can now use M-120, Cortec's heavy-metal-free water-based corrosion inhibitor additive.
M-120 can be used alone or in combination with other inhibitors to boost the corrosion protection capabilities of both water-based and solvent-based systems. It is recommended for use in acrylic and alkyd resin systems. M-120 protects both carbon steel and aluminium.
It contains contact corrosion inhibitors that eliminate in-can corrosion, prevent flash rusting and provide long-term protection to the metal substrate. The additive contains no heavy metals such as zinc phosphate, chromate or barium.
M-120 comes as a off-white/beige paste that can be added to coating formulations at recommended loading levels depending on total formula weight, in proportions ranging from one to three percent by addition.
Cortec's M-120 additive contains a special blend of corrosion inhibitors that protects against corrosion by forming a microscopic inhibitor layer along the contours of the metal substrate. Conventional coatings rely on sacrificial metals such as zinc and chromate for corrosion protection.
Due to their large particle sizes, these inhibitors leave voids that facilitate the initiation of corrosion in micro-pits.
By contrast, M-120 contains inhibitors that have an affinity for metal and seek to conform to the complexity of metal surfaces, creating a protective layer in micro-pits that enables a more complete inhibitor coating.
