Construction Nearing Completion at Togg's Gemlik Factory
ABS Yapı announced that the ground-raising phase at the Gemlik factory being built for Togg, Turkey's first domestically-produced electric vehicle, has been completed across all areas. In a statement from the company, it was noted that "the natural ground throughout the facility was raised in the most economical and rapid manner through reinforced concrete elevated flooring constructed using ABS Fill Void Formwork made from recycled plastic."
Construction activities at the factory for Togg, Turkey's first domestically-produced electric vehicle, set to be built over approximately 1 million 200 thousand square meters of open land in Bursa's Gemlik district, are nearing completion.
Togg's factory, with the first vehicle expected to roll off the line on 29 October 2022, has entered the final stage of ground-raising work. ABS Yapı, which participated in construction activities using ABS Fill Void Formwork, announced the completion of the ground-raising phase with the addition of the latest R&D building. Okan Cüntay, General Manager of ABS Yapı, made the following comments on the matter:
"While the land on which Togg's Gemlik factory will be built—Turkey's most prestigious industrial project—is ideally located, soil improvement work was required at the building foundations, and the ground level above the raft foundation needed to be raised to protect against potential flooding.
When such raising is carried out using natural materials suitable for compaction, such as crushed stone and sand, it creates significant time and cost losses. Additionally, the weight of the filled material further increases soil improvement costs.
In the ground-raising phase of the project, we introduced speed and cost savings by constructing reinforced concrete elevated flooring using ABS Fill Void Formwork, a product we introduced to the construction sector.
At the same time, through the column, arch and dome structure created by the formwork shaping the concrete, we successfully eliminated the risks of settlement, cracking and breakage that could develop over time."

Okan Cüntay, noting that ABS Fill Void Formwork was used over an area exceeding 160 thousand square meters to construct the factory's reinforced concrete elevated flooring, continued as follows: "Single-use formwork manufactured from recycled plastic material enables the creation of reinforced concrete elevated flooring up to 300 cm in height in any structure, thus allowing filling work to be carried out in a lightweight, rapid, easy and economical manner. Okan Cüntay, General Manager of ABS Yapı, provided the following information on the benefits of raising the ground using the reinforced concrete elevated flooring technique constructed with void formwork: "Construction parameters were determined through comprehensive technical studies spanning approximately 6 months during the project phase, after which these findings were confirmed through laboratory testing at technical universities. In the scope of the work, for the total 160,000 square meters of area required, the fill volume needed was reduced from 22,000 truckloads to just 240 truckloads of void formwork. The loads on the soil improvement and above the raft foundation were reduced from 4,200 kg per square meter to 700 kg per square meter. In this way, loads on the foundation were minimized. Compared to traditional filled material methods, the duration of activities expected to take 16 thousand man-days was reduced to 1 thousand man-days, achieving substantial time savings. With the combination of these advantages, significant economic savings were achieved compared to traditional filled material methods.
