Şişecam International Glass Conference

Şişecam Hosts International Glass Conference Şişecam, a global player in the glass and chemicals sectors, brought together leading representatives of the global glass industry at the 37th Şişecam International Glass Conference. Under the theme "International Year of Glass," the conference was held hybrid in Istanbul on 17-18 November, where participants discussed the future of glass, its importance for sustainability, and the boundless development opportunities it offers for meeting future needs.

Şişecam Chairman of the Board and Member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman made the following remarks on the subject:

"Following the pandemic, the world continues its efforts against economic and geopolitical risks as well as risks to nature. Glass stands out as one of the most strategic materials not only of the past but also of the future, with its superior qualities supporting sustainability. At Şişecam, we view glass not merely as a business line but as a highly important tool for serving humanity. We are proud that through the Şişecam International Glass Conferences we have held for 37 years, we have created an important platform that plays a role in developing glass's superior capabilities."  

Şişecam General Manager Görkem Elverici offered the following comments on the subject:

"Without glass in our lives today, civilizations would not have advanced and the world would lack aesthetic value. Glass is a very special material with many irreplaceable capabilities and is open to developments and innovations for creating products and technologies that can meet the needs of the new global order. The Şişecam Glass Conference, established with the aim of creating a platform for developing glass's superior capabilities through the contribution and cooperation of all stakeholders in the industry, had "International Year of Glass" as its main theme this year. The International Year of Glass was celebrated at the conference with panels where new ideas supporting the industry's development were shared, and it brought together leading representatives and scientists from the sector. At the conference, the technological, scientific and economic importance of glass, which has strategic significance in every area of our lives, was discussed, and work was carried out to further open glass's path of unlimited development.  

Glass provides great service to humanity

Şişecam Chairman of the Board and Member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman, emphasizing that glass is a valuable material for the future as much as it is with its 5,000-year history, stated: "Following the pandemic, the world continues its efforts against economic and geopolitical risks as well as risks to nature. While the search for solutions against new risks such as food crisis and energy constraints continues, glass stands out as one of the most strategic materials not only of the past but also of the future, with its superior qualities supporting sustainability. Through the Şişecam International Glass Conferences we have held for 37 years, we aim to create an important platform that plays a role in developing glass's superior capabilities," he said.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman, noting that glass with its 100% and infinitely recyclable properties is the most appropriate solution for our planet's needs, stated the following:

"Glass, which plays a key role in many areas from transportation to housing, from architecture to energy, from health to communication, contains a wide variety and richness of uses that directly serve the United Nations sustainable development goals thanks to its unique structure. With its infinite potential, glass has a unique story. The International Glass Conferences that Şişecam has held for 37 years stand out as an important platform that brings together industry stakeholders and plays a critical role in developing glass's superior capabilities. I believe that new products will be reached through science-based research, and glass that responds to the needs of life and our planet will continue its development through innovation and transformation."

Without glass, the world would be much more fragile and monotonous

Three women scientists who contributed to global glass science on the same panel

On the panel named after William Turner, former President of the International Commission on Glass (ICG), three women engineers who have served the development of glass science for many years and achieved international success came together: Alev Yaraman, Hande Sesigür, and Gülçin Albayrak. At the panel, they shared with industry representatives and scientists the importance and development of glass science and the role of women in it.
