Şişecam Sheds Light on the History of Glass in Its 90th Year
In its 90th year, Şişecam is sponsoring an important project that will shed light on the history of glass. Roman-era glass furnaces and glass remains discovered at the ancient city of Perge will be examined and preserved with Şişecam's contributions.
Şişecam sponsors important project shedding light on glass history in its 90th year. Roman-period glass furnaces and glass remains discovered at Perge Ancient City will be examined and preserved with Şişecam's support.
Founded in 1935 to lay the foundations of the glass industry in Turkey, Şişecam is sponsoring the examination and preservation of glass furnaces and glass remains uncovered during excavations at Perge Ancient City. These findings, believed to date to the Roman period, are expected to contribute to the deep-rooted history of glass in Anatolia.
Prof. Dr. Şebnem Sedef Çokay Kepçe, Head of the Department of Classical Archaeology at Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters and director of the Perge excavation work, commented on the sponsorship: "During our excavation work at the stadium structure of Perge Ancient City, we discovered new findings. We believe that the five glass furnaces dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. that we uncovered in the excavations, and the glass remains we found around these furnaces, will make important contributions to shedding light on the history of glass in Anatolia. In these studies, Şişecam is providing financial support for the restoration of the furnaces, while opening the doors of its R&D center for high-technology analyses of the glass remains we discovered during excavations. The analyses regarding the dating of the remains will be conducted in the laboratories of Şişecam Science, Technology and Design Center."
Contributing to cultural heritage
Continuing its mission of preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations, Şişecam has also established a Glass Art Collection. This valuable collection, which spans approximately 3,500 years of history and is registered with Istanbul Archaeological Museum, consists of 520 ancient glass pieces from the Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The works displayed in this special collection, exhibited at Şişecam Headquarters, illustrate the evolution of the glass art.
