Saytek's CBAM Assessment: Transformation in Industry Has Begun

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), introduced by the European Union as part of its Green Deal and widely known as the carbon border tax, has entered into force with its financial obligations as of 1 January.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), implemented by the European Union under its Green Deal and commonly known as the border carbon tax, entered into force with its financial obligations as of 1 January.

With the new regulation, carbon emissions for companies exporting to Europe are no longer merely an environmental indicator but have become a direct component of cost calculations. While carbon-intensive manufacturers face additional obligations, companies producing low-carbon and certified products gain a significant competitive advantage.

Saytek Board Chairman Özer Yıldırım stated, "With the new regulation, carbon emissions for companies exporting to Europe have become a direct cost item, while companies producing low-carbon and certified products are moving ahead in competition. Carbon regulations are no longer limited to Europe; they are becoming increasingly critical as a competitive criterion in Japan and other developed markets."

"CBAM has triggered structural transformation in industry"
Saytek Medikal and Plastik Sanayi Ticaret A.Ş., operating in the recycling sector, is among companies that achieve carbon reduction through sustainable production models and certify this reduction according to international standards. Saytek Board Chairman Özer Yıldırım, noting that carbon regulation is not merely a financial measure but a trigger for fundamental transformation in industry, spoke as follows:

"With the border carbon tax, the European market is now looking not only at the price and quality of production but also at carbon performance. This change is particularly rewriting the rules of the game in the recycling and plastics sector. In the coming period, measuring, reporting and reducing carbon footprint will not be a choice but an obligation for exporting companies. Companies unable to manage carbon costs will face competitive challenges; firms producing low-carbon goods and certifying this according to international standards will move to a stronger position. We view this process not merely as a tax implementation but as the beginning of lasting transformation in industry."

"Carbon reduction is now converting to economic value"
Yıldırım, emphasizing that the recycling sector is moving to a more strategic position in the new era, described Saytek's steps with these words:
"The recycling sector presents one of the most concrete production models for carbon reduction. As Saytek, we achieve 16,500 tonnes of carbon reduction annually and have certified this reduction according to international independent standards. Since 2022, we have certified the carbon reductions we have accumulated and brought them to market. In this way, we demonstrate that carbon is not only an environmental indicator but also becomes an asset with economic value. For companies with carbon obligations, verified certificates now carry the character of a strategic necessity."

"Provides strong position in global market"
Noting the global spread of carbon regulations, Yıldırım concluded his remarks as follows:
"Carbon performance is no longer a criterion limited to Europe alone. It is becoming increasingly decisive in Japan and other developed markets. For this reason, companies producing low-carbon and certified goods gain advantage not only in Europe but also in the global market. The carbon reductions we have certified according to international standards become a strong part of sustainable supply chains for exporters. Recycling and low-carbon production models constitute an important reference point in global competition."
