PepsiCo Advances Toward 2030 'Net Water Positive' Goal

PepsiCo, one of the world's leading food and beverage companies, continues its work within the framework of the PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy with the goal of shaping a sustainable future in Turkey and globally. Within this framework, PepsiCo, which considers water conservation as one of its top priorities, shared the projects it carries out under the pep+ strategy during World Water Week. PepsiCo once again underlined its commitment to this issue by reaffirming its pledge to become a 'Net Water Positive' company by 2030, with the goal of returning more water to nature than it uses.

PepsiCo, one of the world's largest food and beverage companies, is steadily continuing its work toward a sustainable future in Turkey and globally within the framework of the PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy. The company, which prioritizes water management at the center of its sustainability strategy, has achieved significant successes in many areas ranging from optimizing water use in production to rehabilitating ecosystems. Through projects carried out both globally and in Turkey, PepsiCo continues to take decisive steps toward securing the future of water.

PepsiCo's sustainability strategy, shaped in accordance with the principles of "using less water, recovering water, and increasing access to clean water," is producing significant results in Turkey as well as worldwide. With this approach, it is making a difference not only in production processes but also through the value it provides to society.

PepsiCo Turkey General Manager Evrim Şen: We are among the first companies that believe in the importance of water access and take steps in this area.

Addressing the work conducted toward achieving "Net Water Positive" status within World Water Week, PepsiCo Turkey General Manager Evrim Şen stated: "As PepsiCo, aware that water is the source of life, we are working with all our might to fulfill our responsibility in sustainable water management. On the occasion of World Water Week, we are proud to share the steps we have taken both in Turkey and globally in line with our pep+ strategy to protect, restore, and pass on water resources to future generations. Protecting water resources, optimizing water use in agriculture and production are among PepsiCo's core priorities. While increasing efficiency, we are partnering with leading civil society organizations to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems and improve watershed health. Through our investments in treatment, sanitation, and protection programs, we are enabling more people to access safe water. As one of the first companies that believes in the importance of water access and takes steps in this area, we are targeting to return more than 100 percent of the water we use in high water-risk areas back to the watersheds where we produce." he said.

Emphasizing that these successes achieved on a global scale are the strongest evidence that the targets they have set are realistic and achievable, Şen noted that PepsiCo has provided safe water access to 91 million people since 2006 and aims to increase this number to 100 million by 2030.

PepsiCo Turkey's successes in water management and future targets

Şen stated: "In Turkey, we are carrying out numerous initiatives to increase water efficiency in our factories. For example, since the opening of our Manisa Plant in 2018, through many projects we have managed to reduce the water we consume per kilogram produced at our plant by 52 percent. Additionally, in collaboration with Nature Conservation Center (DKM), we implemented the Water Recovery Project in the Tarsus Berdan watershed in 2023. Through this project, which we implemented to return more water to the watersheds than the amount of operational water we use in our factories, we recovered 69 percent of the water used at our Tarsus plant back to nature in 2023. The project, in which more than 1 million dollars has been invested so far, began to be implemented at PepsiCo's plants in Manisa and Izmir in 2024. Within the scope of the project, we are targeting to recover more than 100 percent of the water we use. As PepsiCo, in every step we take for water protection and more equitable access to water, we aim to produce human-centered solutions. Like globally, we are steadily advancing in protecting the water resources of our planet and society in Turkey by carrying this mission forward to the future." he said.

In line with its "Net Water Positive Target," PepsiCo aims globally to reduce absolute water use by 2030 while also returning more than 100 percent of the water used in high-risk areas back to nature. In addition, it aims to become one of the most water-efficient food and beverage companies in the world.
