Forest Fires Can Be Detected with Nano Detectors
Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ergün, noting that forest fires can be detected in advance using quantum lasers and nano detectors installed in unmanned aerial vehicles, stated: "Fire-prone areas need to be monitored continuously, day and night."
Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ergün, who says that early intervention in forest fires is possible through quantum lasers and nano detectors that sense them, is also attracting attention with his research at the Faculty of Science on Anadolu University's campus.
Prof. Ergün noted that detector systems installed within thermal cameras will easily detect different temperature values on the terrain before a fire occurs, and that this system can easily measure values as small as one-twentieth of one degree Celsius.
Ergün also stated that an alarm will instantly activate when forests with known coordinates face any risk, saying: "During these times when fires are frequent, the terrain needs to be monitored day and night."
Military surveillance alone is not enough
Prof. Dr. Yüksel Ergün, noting that Turkey is making progress in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), said: "With thermal MWIR and LWIR cameras installed on UAVs, continuous flights can be conducted to perform forest risk screening day and night. Particularly in the summer season, these situations have become more serious. Similarly, different temperature data from UAVs should be monitored with various software and, if necessary, emergency response measures should be implemented. Military surveillance alone is no longer sufficient for fires. Establishing mechanisms from the air at a distance of at least 8-10 kilometers will provide us with incredible benefits," he said.Need for personnel capable of data analysis
Prof. Ergün, pointing out that the incentives provided to TÜBİTAK projects for nanotechnology studies and the funds provided to various research centers have produced good results, made the following remarks on the subject: "Thermal detectors are being utilized in early cancer diagnosis, in armored and protective helmets, in solar-powered batteries, in electronic sensors, in sunscreen creams protecting skin against harmful sun rays, and even in monitoring the aging rates of historical buildings. The research laboratories in Eskişehir have the necessary infrastructure and materials. The need for personnel capable of data analysis is increasing day by day. The contribution of accumulated knowledge and properly functioning detectors to our projects is undeniable."Advertisement
