Corneal Transplant Offers New Hope for Vision Restoration

On the occasion of Organ and Tissue Donation Week, Prof. Dr. Dilek Dursun Altınörs, Head of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Unit at the Turkish Ophthalmological Society, invited citizens to consider organ donation, noting that corneal transplantation brings new hope to patients experiencing vision loss. Emphasizing that Turkey provides world-standard services in corneal transplantation and has experienced doctors in this field, Altınörs stated that this surgery can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals who have lost vision due to corneal diseases.

Altınörs noted that there are approximately 48 eye banks throughout Turkey, and that coordination among these banks enables rapid action in emergency situations. Explaining that corneal transplantation provides a solution to vision loss through the transfer of transparent tissue obtained from deceased donors, Prof. Dr. Altınörs drew attention to the important role that organ donation plays in saving lives in society. He clarified that corneal transplantation does not cause aesthetic changes and that the transplanted cornea only restores the ability to see.

Inviting the public to raise awareness about organ donation throughout this week, Altınörs emphasized that corneal transplantation can correct many conditions leading to vision loss. Drawing attention to the value of the difference that organ donation can create in a person's life, he reiterated his appeal with the statement, "One donation can create an infinite difference in someone's life."
