Brock Commons Tallwood House

Brock Commons Tallwood House is an innovative, very tall timber hybrid building at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Brock Commons demonstrates mass timber as a practical building material in a high-rise application and shows an innovative and sustainable path to improving building performance. The construction of Brock Commons proved that the innovative mass timber-hybrid structural system is economically feasible, repeatable, and adaptable to other building types and uses. A small team of nine people completed the mass timber construction, from the arrival of prefabricated components to the site, in just 70 days—two months ahead of the original schedule. The structure includes two 18-storey concrete cores, which contain exit stairs and elevators, as well as 17 storeys of cross-laminated timber floors. These timber floors are supported on adhesive-laminated timber columns, above a concrete base. The podium level is wrapped with curtain wall glass and glass polished panels. A large cross-laminated timber (CLT) canopy spans the length of the building, which has a gross area of 15,115 m2. The roof comprises prefabricated steel beams and metal floor covering sections; the roofing material was pre-applied during construction to provide rapid waterproofing. The building envelope is a prefabricated panel system covered with wood fibre high-pressure laminate.

Metropol Parasol

The redevelopment of Plaza de la Encarnacion in Seville, designed by J. MAYER H. architects, "Metropol Parasol" has become Seville's new icon. This structure successfully emphasizes that Seville is one of the world's most captivating cultural event centres. Metropol Parasol explores the potential of Plaza de la Encarnacion to become a new contemporary city centre. This structure and its surroundings, serving as a unique urban centre within the dense medieval fabric of Seville, enable a wide variety of activities such as spending time, witnessing history, and shopping. Highly developed infrastructure helps activate the square, making it an attractive focal point for tourists and locals alike. With its impressive timber structures, the "Metropol Parasol" scheme houses a panoramic terrace beneath and within the parasols, an archaeology museum, a farmers' market, an elevated plaza, and numerous bars and restaurants. The parasols, among the largest and most innovative built timber constructions coated with polyurethane, transition from archaeological excavation sites to a contemporary turn, defining a unique relationship between historical and contemporary city. The character used in the "Metropol Parasols" mix initiates a dynamic development for culture and commerce in the heart of Seville and beyond.

Knarvik Church

Located between the gateway to Norway's stunning network of fjords in Hordaland, the 2,250 square metre angular timber structure rests calmly on a slope, cut like a folded star against a plain grey sky. Nevertheless, while the angular shape extends beyond the flat, natural surroundings, it remarkably shows perfect harmony with the environment. The church sits on a rock face surrounded by low shade and trees, which enhances the otherworldly splendour of the structure. The foyer section of the building contains a magnificent main hall with capacity for up to 500 people. Here, timber partitions meet at different angles, and white light rectangles—reflecting the shape of grooved windows and lending a spiritual dimension to the airy interior—form a sloped ceiling.
