Hyundai Motor Turkey (HMTR), which has maintained uninterrupted production in Turkey for approximately 30 years, has added a new investment to its electric vehicle transformation efforts. The company, which will begin series production of the IONIQ 3 model in August, will establish a new battery assembly facility at its Izmir plant to support this model, allocating EUR 55 million of its total EUR 715 million investment to this new factory.
The battery facility, to be implemented in cooperation between Hyundai Motor Turkey and Hyundai Mobis, will contribute to the development of advanced technologies required in electric vehicle production within Turkey. The investment, which will initially create employment for more than 300 people, is expected to make significant contributions to strengthening the domestic supply ecosystem and increasing Turkey's competency in the electric mobility sector.
New era in electric vehicle production
Murat Berkel, General Manager of Sales, Marketing and After-Sales at Hyundai Motor Turkey, made the following remarks regarding the investment:
“At our Izmir plant, Hyundai's first overseas production facility, we have produced 3.3 million vehicles since 1997. Today, as Hyundai Motor Turkey, we are proud to announce our new battery investment. We believe that this investment, which is of great importance both for our country and for the Turkish automotive industry, will make significant contributions to the growth of our brand in Turkey and the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.”
Production target exceeds 40,000 units annually
Within the scope of the investment, NMC battery cells will be supplied from Hungary, while LFP-type short-range battery cells will be sourced from China for the battery factory to be established. In the fully automated facility, cells will be converted into battery packs and prepared for vehicle production.
Approximately 27,000 units are planned to be produced within this year, while production capacity is targeted to exceed 40,000 units in 2027.

30,000 square meter high-technology investment
In the new battery factory established over a total area of 30,000 square meters, 27 robots will operate. In the production line with a high level of automation, battery packing processes will be carried out with minimal human intervention.
The new facility will provide infrastructure not only for the IONIQ 3 model, which will begin series production in August, but also for new electric and hybrid vehicle projects that may be produced in Turkey in the coming period. Additionally, the investment is expected to contribute to the development of the domestic supply industry and the strengthening of the electric vehicle supply chain.
IONIQ 3 to be launched in September
The IONIQ 3, the second domestically produced electric model that Hyundai Motor Turkey will manufacture in Turkey, will begin coming off the production line in August. The model is planned to be launched in the Turkish market in September with two different battery and power options.
With the new battery investment, Hyundai Motor Turkey aims both to increase its production capacity and to contribute to Turkey's transformation in electric vehicle technologies.
