The Fourth Agricultural Revolution Will Save the Future
A large portion of our food needs is supplied by agriculture. However, as the global population rises, available resources are declining. Food producers can increase productivity and secure the future by transitioning to the fourth industrial revolution in agriculture, utilizing smart technologies.
According to recent findings, humanity has been engaged in agriculture for 23,000 years, meaning agriculture has always held a priority position in human life. Consequently, a significant portion of our food needs is supplied by agriculture.
However, as world population increases, nutritional demand grows proportionally. In the face of this increase, agricultural land is declining at an opposite rate with each passing day.
This decline has been observed at a rate of 50 percent over 50 years. While this rate varies from country to country, in Turkey it reaches much higher levels. As a result of this puzzling equation, the question arises: how will we meet the food needs of the world population?
In the face of a growing population and diminishing resources, TreeT General Manager Mustafa Tamer, who argues that we must obtain maximum yield from smaller areas to meet the needs of the global population, adds the following:
"The agricultural sector, particularly over the last 10 years, has developed very rapidly and has now transformed into what we call Agriculture 4.0.
Today, thanks to what we call the Internet of Things, or IoT, all machinery in the field can communicate with each other. Beyond that, through smart technologies, the entire system from seed to shelf becomes traceable.
Through technologies used in agriculture, that is, smart farming applications, it is possible to predict how much and what type of fertilizer should be applied to which area of the land and how much water should be given to which area through thermal satellite imagery.
Through soil analysis equipment, determining what should be planted in which area, and through drones, quickly understanding what is happening in the field increases the yield obtained from agriculture. This also makes the producer's work much easier and faster compared to traditional methods. The reflections of Industry 4.0 in agriculture do not stop there; products that are traceable and reach consumers directly from the producer are offered to food producers. In short, with this new revolution in agriculture, products are harvested faster and at lower cost, obtaining greater yield from minimum area. Interpreting the data obtained as a result of all this constitutes the most important part of the work. In other words; you obtain data by using smart technologies, but if you cannot use it correctly, you cannot gain yield from agriculture. At this point, appropriate technologies must be used in agriculture, and the data must be correctly interpreted so it can be properly processed. Because when data is interpreted correctly, better results are achieved each time, and productivity increases manifold.
