A study commissioned by Glidden® Paint provides better insight into why U.S. adults tend to procrastinate on home projects like painting. Glidden Paint calls this phenomenon "paint procrastination - procrastipainting." Yes, it's a real word, so real that it has even made its way into Urban Dictionary, an online slang dictionary. Approximately 84 million Americans intend to paint a room in their homes next year. The key word here is "intend." Most survey respondents agree that painting is easy, yet a quarter of respondents admit they will still procrastinate. In fact, this survey reveals that Americans are even more likely to postpone home maintenance. Luke Klein, Senior Brand Marketing Manager at Glidden Paint, said, "What prevents people from giving their homes a fresh look is the ability to get started. We created useful tools to help people stop procrastinating and take action."

Millennials (Generation Y) are a unique generation when it comes to how they procrastinate:

• Next year, 41% of Generation Y plans to undertake a home painting project. That is approximately 30 million Americans born between 1981 and 1996. • Millennials are 13% more likely to procrastinate on smaller tasks like painting a room or making repairs around the house compared to other generations. However, they are less likely to postpone larger, more expensive home improvement projects than other generations. • When they have free time, only 3% of millennials will prioritize home improvement. Instead, they will focus on spending time with friends and self-care activities. • Nearly a quarter of millennials would prefer to get a tattoo rather than start a painting project. This is a form of painting, of course, but one that will last forever. Klein said, "Approximately 60 million U.S. adults will likely procrastinate on a home painting project next year, but the same survey sheds light on what motivates them to get started," and added, "Do-it-yourselfers have many tools they can use to begin their projects. We really want to make it easy to take action. After all, the earlier you start your painting project, the sooner you can enjoy your home." Preparing walls and rooms is harder than painting.
