Approximately 40% of total energy consumed in our country is used in residential buildings, and approximately 70% of energy consumed in homes is used for heating in winter months and air conditioning and electricity for cooling in summer months.

Energy losses in a dwelling originate approximately 40% from walls, 25% from the roof, 20% from windows and 15% from the floor. Compared to European countries, although the energy we consume per capita is 1/3 less, we consume 100% more energy for heating. The energy we spend on heating in our country is approximately 50% more than France, for example, and 23% more than Sweden. To achieve energy savings in residential buildings, high-energy-class white goods and energy-saving lighting are used. It also notes that the insulation investment will be amortized on average within 3 years and that the value of the building will increase. Baumit officials emphasize that the Building Thermal Insulation Regulation has made thermal insulation and energy savings mandatory for all new buildings constructed since June 2000; however, 85% of existing buildings in Turkey still lack insulation. They note that the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) application for buildings, which began on 1 January 2011 and is targeted to be completed by 1 January 2017, is also an important implementation in this regard. The Energy Performance Certificate is a classification of buildings' energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions on a scale from A to G. After 1 January 2017, purchase-sale and rental transactions of buildings and apartments without an Energy Performance Certificate will not be permitted. Once the deadline has passed and this certificate is obtained for every building, the energy classes of buildings will become an evaluation criterion for consumers, just as they are for automobiles or white goods.
