DHL Opens New European Innovation Center to Shape the Future of Logistics

DHL Group has advanced its vision for digital transformation and sustainability in logistics with a new Europe Innovation Centre opened in Troisdorf, Germany. The 5,360-square-metre facility, located near the headquarters in Bonn, is equipped with artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT) and environmentally friendly technologies.

Operating entirely on renewable energy and designed to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions through its cross-laminated timber structure, the centre was designed to comply with DGNB Platinum certification, one of the highest standards for green buildings in Europe. The centre will also serve as a platform where customers, academic institutions and industry stakeholders collaborate to develop innovative logistics solutions.

Katja Busch, Director of Customer Solutions and Innovation at DHL, commented on the importance of the centre, stating, "Innovation is the driving force of our transformation. The new DHL Europe Innovation Centre is redefining what is possible in logistics by turning ideas into impact."

A survey conducted by DHL among 2,500 supply chain professionals globally revealed that three main trends shaping the future logistics sector are Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). The company's contract logistics unit DHL Supply Chain has to date implemented over 10,000 automation and digitalisation projects worldwide and integrated more than 8,000 collaborative robots into its operations.

Buket Cox, General Manager of DHL Supply Chain Turkey, noted that Turkey also plays an active role in this innovation ecosystem, stating, "With our R&D centre operating since 2017, we are developing innovative solutions in many areas ranging from artificial intelligence to green logistics." Among the R&D projects are AI-powered mobile assistant DHL Genie, gamified HSE Game, and sustainability-focused initiatives such as RECIRCULATE.

The new facility, as part of DHL's global innovation network alongside centres in the Americas, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, will contribute to scaling technologies that shape the future of logistics.
