Karenia Brevis Algae Bloom Reaches Turkey

This disease, frequently seen among sailors due to insufficient vitamin C intake, has begun to reappear in recent times. Dr. Funda Özsarı, Member of the European Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, has warned that the rise in scurvy cases in Turkey could seriously affect dental health.

Özsarı, noting that individuals with poor nutrition and young people are at risk, underlined that healthy nutrition is vital in terms of gum and dental health.

"Scurvy Did Not Remain Only in History, It Is Being Seen Again Today"

Dr. Funda Özsarı, drawing attention to the effects of scurvy on dental health, stated: "Scurvy, due to vitamin C deficiency, leads to serious problems such as gum bleeding, tooth loss and gum recession. In the past, this disease was associated with sailors; they contracted the disease because they could not consume fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods at sea. However, with the increase in fast-food consumption and the decrease in fresh food consumption in recent times, scurvy has come to the fore again."

Do Not Neglect Vitamin C Intake for Your Dental Health

Dr. Özsarı, emphasizing the harmful effects of scurvy on dental health, noted that vitamin C deficiency weakens gums and can lead to tooth loss. Özsarı stated: "Vitamin C deficiency can cause gum sensitivity, easy bleeding and loss of tooth support structures. For this reason, fresh vegetables and fruits should be consumed, and necessary vitamin intake should not be neglected."

Pay Attention to Early Signs of Scurvy

Özsarı, noting that symptoms such as gum bleeding and sensitivity may be the first signs of scurvy, said that these symptoms should be taken seriously. Özsarı continued: "If you experience gum bleeding while brushing your teeth or eating hard foods, this may be a sign of scurvy. If early intervention is not provided, it can reach levels that may lead to tooth loss."

Nutrition Recommendations for Aesthetic and Healthy Smiles According to European Standards

Dr. Funda Özsarı, addressing the importance of healthy and strong gums in aesthetic dentistry, stated that balanced eating habits directly influence smile design. "Smile aesthetics is not only about white and straight teeth, but is also completed with healthy gums. For this reason, foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges, kiwi, strawberries and broccoli must be included in the diet for an aesthetic smile and a healthy oral structure," she explained.

Public Awareness Against Scurvy Needs to Be Increased

Dr. Funda Özsarı noted that the renewed increase in scurvy is concerning from a public health perspective and that awareness needs to be raised on this issue. Dr. Özsarı stated: "It is very important that our people, especially young people, pay attention to healthy nutrition and dental health. To prevent gum diseases, we should review our eating habits and undergo regular dental check-ups."
