Iron and Steel Sector Takes Action on European Green Deal The European Union's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, particularly through implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in line with compliance with the European Green Deal, are expected to affect all sectors, especially those with high emissions such as iron and steel, aluminium, electricity and cement. The CBAM, which will begin in 2026 and provides for taxation of imported products based on their carbon content, was enacted in 2023, thereby launching a three-year transition period. Aegean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association Board Chairman Yalçın Ertan stated, "Our association has been closely monitoring developments regarding the European Green Deal and the CBAM since day one. In line with this, we added a new project to our work with an EU initiative titled 'INTER-CLUSTER COLLABORATION FOR CARBON MANAGEMENT.' Our application within the scope of the European Commission's Civil Society Action towards European Green Deal call for proposals received approval recently, and the project launched as of 2024. The coordinating organization of the project is the Energy Industrialists and Businessmen Association (ENSİA), and the other partner is Co.Svi.G. Scrl from Italy." Chairman Ertan said, "The general objective of the project is to enhance the capacity of Civil Society Organizations regarding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and Carbon Management to support the achievement of the EU European Green Deal targets. The first specific objective of the project is to strengthen the institutional and operational capacities of Clusters regarding Carbon Management and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism through the transfer of best practices in the EU. From an industrial sector perspective, it is estimated that approximately 40 per cent of Turkey's exports will be affected by the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism." Yalçın Ertan said, "The second specific objective of the action is to ensure cluster members are prepared on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and Carbon Management by increasing their capacities. The third specific objective of the action is to support active participation of Clusters in decision-making processes in the preparation of national legislation aligned with the EU Green Deal. Within the scope of the project, activities such as working visits to the EU, workshops in Turkey and Italy, awareness-raising training, and focus group meetings with representatives from public authorities and ministries are planned to be conducted." Chairman Ertan said, "With our 36-month project, we aim to develop the institutional and organizational capacities of clusters on EU Green Deal Carbon Management and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms, strengthen partnerships between Turkey and the EU, ensure transfer of best practices from the EU to Turkey and exchange of information between countries, and support active participation in legislation and decision-making processes to be prepared in line with the EU Green Deal."
