An Innovative and State-of-the-Art Product from Clariant: Hostagel® PH1

Hygiene at home, particularly in the toilet, holds a very important place in our daily lives. According to Euromonitor International's Turkey Toilet Cleaning 2018 Report, Turks, who adopt a traditional approach, prefer products with strong performance, reasonable cost and efficiency when cleaning their toilets. In this context, due to the effectiveness it provides, the majority of local consumers continue to use bleach for home cleaning. With the increase in per capita income in the country, retail sales activities began to undergo rapid transformation from an unorganized system to modern retailers. With the impact of increasing sales through discount stores, toilet cleaning products have recently shown a sharp rise in household usage rates in Turkey. Hostagel® PH1 ensures that recommended acid-based formulations remain stable while reducing viscosity changes in the formulation to a minimum. For acid-based formulations, the acid-based thickener Hostagel® PH1 offers one of the most flexible and comprehensive solutions that does not require additional surfactants.

The product in question thickens HCl acid-based formulations in the presence of chloride ions and acid-based cleaners such as phosphoric, sulfamic and sulfuric acid.

Sanem Yurt, Technical Application Manager for Personal Care and Industrial Home Care at Clariant Industrial and Specialty Products Business Unit, stated: "Acid-based formulations thickened with Hostagel® PH1, especially when used together with amine oxides, provide long-term stability and reduce viscosity changes, are easy to formulate, dissolve well in water and provide high cleaning power." The required amount of Hostagel® PH1 varies based on the viscosity target for the final toilet cleaner formulation and the acids used together, but generally 1 to 3% Hostagel® PH1 can be used. The viscosity of acid-based formulations containing Hostagel® PH1 may decrease after storage, depending on the solvents and surfactants used. It should be noted that this is a normal condition and affects other thickening systems as well. Hostagel® PH1 can be stored for at least 2 years at room temperature in its sealed packaging under recommended conditions. Hostagel® PH1 should not be exposed to cold during transport and storage. The product has a tendency to crystallize at room temperature and become more viscous at lower temperatures. When exposed to cold, the properties of Hostagel® PH1 may change in the reverse direction. If Hostagel® PH1 becomes cloudy, viscous or freezes as a result of cold exposure, dissolve the product slowly at 30-40 °C and then stir for a short time.
